Yeah, in most cases with comedies and especially slice of life shows I don't see an issue with some slight tonal shifts as long as it feels natural. When something is emulating everyday life, it just makes sense to me that things won't be super happy all the time, as it is with regular life. That's not to say that shifts in tone can't be done so badly that even I have issues with them sometimes. However, it's usually when it goes the other way, with a dramatic series having really badly implemented moments of comedic relief. Somewhat recently, the worst example of that for me has been the first season of Black Butler. One moment, someone might be getting chased around with a very horror-like tone, or a young kid (the main character) might be getting tortured, but then shit will randomly get super silly. It can be very jarring.

Anyway, when I mentioned "muppet face", that was something specific to Amanchu, and to a lesser extent the creator's previous series, Aria. Here's an example:


While other series might have similar deformed, silly faces, I haven't seen any others that look this Muppet-like and I don't think there is a specific term for it. The closest thing I can think of would be "chibi", but that usually involves deforming an entire body to silly affect.
