Also just looked at your profile for the first time in a while, was close to mentioning I recently finished Casshern Sins which I enjoyed, and also just because it's so rarely brought up... Fuujin Monogatari for the win. Also I'll be checking out Argento Soma too due to your inclusion, as well as Twelve Kingdoms and Lupin which I've so woefully neglected. Appreciate the recs!

Well, between finishing it a few days ago and now I binged all of Hajime no Ippo so it's not completely fresh, but I've got mixed feelings on it... I appreciated the solid worldbuilding, especially on the atmospheric front with the use of eerie music, natural noise and those surreal, dreamlike stitches of panning shots of intriguing angles of the city and surroundings and artful interpretations of mental states and actions, but in the middle I felt as if the drivers of the plot regarding the gangland/pseudopolitical dynamics surrounding the stranger/Ichise/Keigo and the mysteries of Ran's visions/the city/Ichise's father/the stranger's & Eriko's goals were a bit too thin to be strung out for as long as they were, and I must fully admit that my view of the show is totally skewed, as rather than tough it out and possibly be rewarded with the unfolding of the true plot, which after going back I still don't fully understand, I ended up skipping from around episode 15 to 20 at which point many things changed due to the class's takeover, final clashes with them and Kano's introduction taking place in those episodes which certainly add some interesting elements to the story.

So, I can't properly judge it in total. But also, why it wasn't a big hit with me personally, or at least not enough to get me through those middle episodes, was just the darkness/lack of levity among any of the characters, with the stranger initially filling that role to a degree but ultimately turning out to be one of the darkest. I guess Shinji and some other gang members attempt it as well but it's something I personally seek out and weigh heavily, that vibrancy/range of character which debatably only Keigo seemed to exhibit to a considerable degree. I do enjoy a good bleak program, but I fear I could unconsciously feel that this one would end even a little bleakly for me, the debatable redemption/moving-toward-the-light of Ichise aside. All this being said I do think the premise of the plot especially toward the end is intriguing.

What about you?

I owe you some answers but so do you. If you just wanna learn the truth behind that sth then i don't have any problem conversing with you on anything any time. But i hate long replies so imma keep it straight and short starting with the biggest issue;

Are originality and realism the NECESSARY measurement that makes a particular work good? If yes then on what basis, to what extent and what's the basis for that extent as well?

Hey, I was planning to continue watching Sousou no Frieren, but I see you got to episode 16 and then dropped it. May I know why
By the way, I found your account while reading reviews of the anime Terra E. While I'm Eating Ice Cream. You have great taste in animešŸ¤

I loved the concept, but it's like they were afraid to go all the way. Quantum mechanics: The Anime? Sounds awesome on paper, but it's like they didn't know how to tie it all together and the studio forced them to stretch it into 26 episodes anyway. Loved all the fight scenes, though. Especially the parts with the choppier and stylized animation!

I liked whenever the gang got together to solve whatever each episode's current threat was as well as the subplot about their daily lives and struggles.

I guess I wanted to see more of the future world and a more focused story in general. Noein could have easily been done in 16-18 episodes.

Top notch music too. Didn't notice the similarity of the main motiff with Rachmaninoff until you pointed it out in a forum post.

What's your thoughts on Noein? Finished it yesterday and I thought it was pretty good, despite the very slow pace.
TRC_Randy Feb 19, 5:38 AM
Hah. Imma pretend i never read those SEL and Texhnolyze threads.

Yeah Gurren Lagann is arguably the most epic "shounen" out there. I actually even rewatched it. Not as great as the first time tho. And ofc not the comedy and fan service. They're the worst part of it.
TRC_Randy Dec 24, 2023 11:38 PM
Yeah. Got me confused for a while seeing you completed all eps yet dropped it. And how's Gurren Lagann?
TRC_Randy Dec 22, 2023 3:47 PM
Is Gin no Saji good?

that's kind of you, thank you! yes, you're absolutely welcome to add me on Discord, my username is the same on there. :)

Goood reason. Thanks!

Which screenshot do you think would make the best thumbnail for my ranking?

One that best describes Juuni Kokuki as a whole as well as would attract people's interest towards it. How beautiful it looks is only a bonus.

I personally like this one the most but it'd be too spoiling
TRC_Randy Oct 29, 2023 8:49 PM
I can see what you mean.

Idk, for me tho i didn't actually like it. For some reason the audiovisuals are turning me off more than drawing me in. I suppose i'll stop watching it for a couple days before starting from square one.
TRC_Randy Oct 28, 2023 10:01 PM
Damn boi. You finished Pluto already? You must've been binging it these few days. What did you think of it?
velveteenvamp Oct 27, 2023 3:50 AM
I think perhaps what it really boils down to is how tolerant one is of philosophy and works that heavily invite interpretation. a running theme in most of my favourites is that they're highly subjective and you'll get a different interpreration from each fan. not everyone enjoys that kind of thing and I can respect that: there's nothing wrong with a more direct approach either. the questions Lain asks, like you say, are very broad and that's the appeal for me--sometimes my interpretations of certain things in the show actually contradict themselves, but I really enjoy that back and forth in philosophy. I suppose I have a bit of a Socratic approach (and that's certainly a method that a lot of people have qualms with because it can go in circles). so, for me, that's where much of the depth lies: it's something that makes me think and question. it also led to me looking up a lot of things that were mentioned in the show so I learned a lot from it, too. I just find Lain so endlessly fascinating and it probably helps that I feel a lot of kinship with Lain herself. I do understand what you mean, though, and again, I'm not trying to proselytise to you (or anyone else), I'm just happy to discuss it and why it resonates with me.

I really enjoy unique storytelling and divisive anime (I have School Days in my faves and I'm being completely sincere! šŸ¤£), if after watching something, I have questions and I want to have a conversation with someone about it, I'm satisfied. I just looked up Pantheon and it sounds cool, thanks for the shout (it also has an actor I love from Lost so that's a great plus)! thanks again for reading my long-winded bleating, it's great to have a thoughtful discussion with someone.
