War. There are lives that will be lost during a war, following by the grief by their close ones upon receiving the dreaded news. Both shows depict such themes well, reminding us about the cruelty of war. KonoKata did a stellar job depicting the actual happenings during a war, while Violet Evergarden is severely lacking in realism when it comes to the actual thing about war, it still manages to deliver the realistic tragedy that war may bring upon us. If you wanted a larger dose of realism, go for KonoKata. If you wanted drama with superb presentation, go for Violet Evergarden.

I am not sure which show should I put as the recommended one, seeing that both shows are already popular in their respective seasons. Now then, onto the most similar part of these two shows - the process of emotion learning. Both protagonists (Elias from Mahoutsukai, and Violet Evergarden the titular character) have went through a messed up past, causing them to lose the ability to act as humans, and sense emotions. Both shows set up episodic parts and through the interaction of many other characters, our protagonists gradually learn these emotions, often in some sort of heartwarming tales. Animation wise, both are top notch, we have Wit Studio doing Mahoutsukai and Kyoto Animation doing Violet Evergarden. They are both in fantastical worlds, Mahoutsukai is supposedly set in the real world with magical elements blended and hidden in it, while the latter is set in post WW1 era but in a totally fictional world with fictional countries. While Mahoutsukai is more geared towards magical, slice of life and romance themes, Violet Evergarden instead focuses on the personal character development of the titular character herself.

When it comes to relaxing Slice of Life animes, Natsume Yuujinchou, Mushishi and Aria comes to mind. While it is true that the former two are more closer to Mahoutsukai no Yome in terms of the themes they are dealing with (supernatural elements), Aria and MnY do share many similarities. (This recommendation was made from my early impressions of the first 3 episodes of Mahoutsukai no Yome). Both involve telling short, episodic tales on how life can be very beautiful should we view it in a positive light, allowing them to be great shows to ease our stressful minds that took a huge toll from our daily lives. As ugly as the real world may be, there are wonderful things to be discovered, and both shows did great to highlight these things. When it comes to presentation, both are similar as well, utilizing beautiful scenery and landscape, as well as relaxing music as we indulge ourselves in the beautiful world both shows are presenting in. The worlds introduced are large and are full with mysteries, and both shows will guide you slowly and gently as you immerse yourself into the worlds. Mahoutsukai no Yome may have slightly darker elements as compared to the pure Aria the Animation, as both our leads seem to have dark pasts surrounding them.

Viewers can quickly notice the similarity of art styles from both shows - exaggerated facial expressions, 3DCG for stuffs that aren't characters. Both also involve games with high stakes.

I got very strong AnoHana vibes when watching Koe no Katachi. Both shows deal with a group of childhood friends who become distant after some incidents in the past, and how they restore their friendship when they meet again in the future.

Wishes. The main theme for both shows. And teenage girls are the only ones involved in all this. Madoka has a mahou shoujo system while WIXOSS has the LRIG system, which are very identical as such one may grant a wish should certain requirements are fulfilled and there is a fair price to pay should one be involved. With that said, both started out pretty light-hearted before turning into something really dark. The Madoka vibes are strong in WIXOSS, if you love that sort of thing.

Girls battling with each other, where they have their real life versions of themselves, and an "avatar" counterpart from another world that does the fighting for them. Both shows involve teenage girls cutting at each others throats, which is quite a thing in anime. Notably, the psychological aspects for both shows are really strong, the girls often struggling from some sort of complex and depression is very prevalent. So if you love seeing girls screaming at one another and hugging their own shoulders weeping in agony, watch BRS and WIXOSS.

...then you might like Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic add

Both shows are about tons of magical spells and in a fantasy, medieval setting. Oh and there's the adventure aspect in both shows as well. Magi is one of the more popular recent anime, and I am betting many active anime watchers should've already caught up with it. As for Slayers, due to its age, many younger viewers like me might've missed it back then.

...then you might like ef: A Tale of Memories. add

The biggest similarity between them would be the dialogues, many characters in both series like to speak in metaphors. So if you like to immerse yourself into deep dialogues, both series may be to your liking. Black Lagoon is a gun-loaded action series with a darker tone, while ef-A Tale of Memories is a romance series with a brighter tone.

Set in the same chaotic time period of Bakumatsu. Both of them have very serious tones, involving bloodshed and only have the mildest of comedies. Ryoma and Kenshin both have loved ones whom they ultimately cannot be together forever due to circumstances. And finally, death is the central theme for between these two.

I find the part where Tomoya enters the workforce is similar to Rec's overall tone. Both male leads face hardships in their respective jobs and of course, both have romance as the main genre to boot.
