This interest stack aims to compile all available When They Cry anime titles on MyAnimeList ordered according to the release date of each title's respective first episode and to provide a watch order for those new to the series. There are two main titles that fit this criteria: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (officially titled in English as "When They Cry") and Umineko no Naku Koro ni (officially titled in English as "Umineko: When They Cry"). Henceforth these titles will be referred to as simply Higurashi and Umineko respectively.

~~~~~AT A GLANCE~~~~~
There are two main titles: Higurashi and Umineko. In this watch guide, Higurashi will be split into two different series: The main series and the sequel series. The difference between these two series' is that the main series begins and concludes the original story as it was intended and the sequel series is simply a sequel to that story, taking place afterwards.
As for the watch order, it is strongly advised that anyone should start with Higurashi's main series. After that, they may watch Umineko and/or Higurashi's sequel series, in either order. Although one does not explicitly need to watch Higurashi at any point to watch Umineko, since Umineko frequently references Higurashi in ways that go further than simple fanservice (and since both series carry a strikingly similar appeal), I personally say that anyone interested in Umineko should first consider watching Higurashi's main series.
It is also worth noting that these titles were adapted from visual novels, and not always will people agree that the animes are even worth looking into at all. I however have seen both animes, read both mangas, and read both visual novels. My take is as follows:
In both the case of Higurashi and Umineko, the visual novels are best and the manga are great, too. Higurashi has a great anime adaptation while Umineko has a poor anime adaptation. So pick the adaptation you please, but it's best to avoid the anime adaptation of Umineko.
~~~~~WHAT YOU MUST KNOW~~~~~
Regarding Higurashi's Main Series:
-This begins and concludes the original story as it was intended.
-This is the first chronological series relative to all else.
-While I will list Rei as part of the main series, it does adapt a fandisc and is technically not necessary to watch, but it is a good idea to give it a watch before proceeding elsewhere.

Regarding Umineko:
-Umineko occurs in the same Universe as Higurashi, though it is best viewed as an independent series
-Umineko implicitly spoils Higurashi and references it multiple times so it is strongly advised to watch after Higurashi.
-You do not need to watch Higurashi to watch Umineko and neither do you need to watch Umineko to watch Higurashi.
-Umineko's anime adaptation only covers the first half of the series and thus has yet to receive a conclusion outside of other adapted media. It's visual novels and manga have been officially licensed in English and both are complete.

Regarding Higurashi's Sequel Series:
-Higurashi's sequel series begins after the main series with its own original, independent conflict.
-Despite popular misconceptions, the sequel series is indeed a sequel to the main series. You must have experienced the main series before experiencing the sequel series.
-The sequel series is not based on a visual novel or otherwise. Both the manga and anime were aired/published simultaneously.
-The sequel series is largely regarded as undesirable (a sentiment I share). You can just go ahead and skip this series altogether in the same way you might skip the new Star Wars trilogy. Alternatively, you may wish to check out the manga as it is to receive an original ending and has thus far garnered a more positive reception than its anime counterpart, though it has not concluded as of yet.

Regarding Additional Content:
-Additional content is content deemed unnecessary to watch.
-Additional content is not cannon within any non-additional content.
-Additional content is not cannon within any other additional content.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
TV, 2006, 26 eps Me:- Author:-
Aired 2006-04-05 to 2006-09-27.
Part one of three of Higurashi's main series.
Covers all four question arcs and the first two answer arcs.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai
TV, 2007, 24 eps Me:- Author:-
Aired 2007-07-06 to 2007-12-18.
Part two of three of Higurashi's main series.
I can't be sure of this, but it appears the first episode is an anime original episode. It is probably worth watching, though.
Soon after is the beginning of Yakusamashi-hen, which is an anime-original arc. It was requested at the behest of Ryukishi07 (the original creator) for the sake of including important plot information that was not included in the first season of the anime, as well as to tie the two seasons together. It is probably best not to miss.
Beginning in Episode six, the anime resumes where the last season left off by telling the final two arcs as presented in the visual novel.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Special: Nekogoroshi-hen
Special, 2007, 1 ep Me:- Author:-
Additional content. Aired 2007-08-02.
Special episode. Covers a extra arc adapted from a light novel.
Aired the same day as the release of episode five of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai. Conveniently, an arc ended that same episode, so you may want to watch it then. I, on the other hand, watched it before I started watching Kai and had no issue in doing so. It is also worth noting that Wikipedia lists this as the 27th episode, as in it should be watched between the first and second season.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai Specials
Special, 2007, 24 eps Me:- Author:-
Additional content. Aired 2007-09-21 to 2008-08-22.
Special episodes bundled with the release of the DVDs of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai that edit and re-dub scenes, usually for comedic effect. But since I'm writing this, I can say that it's actually pretty bad. But it has a decent score so I guess I'm just in the minority.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei
OVA, 2009, 5 eps Me:- Author:-
Aired 2009-02-25 to 2009-08-21.
Part three of three of Higurashi's main series.
Adapts the fandisc of the same name. Contains two fun, fan-service-y arcs, covered in episode one and five (Hajisarashi and Hirukowashi, respectively. Hajirasashi was not included in the original Rei fandisc and is seemingly replacing Batsukoishi, which was in the original fandisc but was later adapted in Kira), and a more serious arc from episodes two through four (Saikoroshi).
Umineko no Naku Koro ni
TV, 2009, 26 eps Me:- Author:-
Aired 2009-07-02 to 2009-12-24.
Only season of Umineko. Covers the first half of the story. Has yet to receive a second season.
Umineko no Naku Koro ni Specials
Special, 2009, 26 eps Me:- Author:-
Additional content. Aired 2009-10-23 to 2010-10-24.
Same deal as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai Specials but for Umineko no Naku Koro ni.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira
OVA, 2011, 4 eps Me:- Author:-
Additional content. Aired 2011-07-21 to 2012-01-25.
OVA episodes meant to celebrate Higurashi's 10th anniversary. Primarily fanservice.
It seems that judging by the average score that people don't seem too fond of this one. But I say otherwise. I thought it was actually a lot of fun and worth the watch.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak
OVA, 2013, 1 ep Me:- Author:-
Additional content. Aired 2013-08-15.
OVA episode covering an extra arc of Higurashi.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou
TV, 2020, 24 eps Me:- Author:-
Aired 2020-10-01 to 2021-03-19.
Part one of two of Higurashi's sequel series.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu
TV, 2021, 15 eps Me:- Author:-
Aired 2021-07-01 to 2021-09-30.
Part two of two of Higurashi's sequel series.
It received largely negative reception from fans of the series, but the manga counterpart to Sotsu (Meguri) contains a somewhat different storyline than the anime and has received generally positive reception. It has been finished as of 2024-01-26.
