On a scale of “Characters need therapy” to “I’ll need therapy”
MangaSpoiler
These mangas left an impression with their unflinching/raw portrayals of the messed up. If you're like me, not easily fazed by dark/twisted fictional content that depicts & deals with (most) toxic human behaviours and unsettling themes/topics, this is for you.
Elements like paedophilia, sexual contact between children & older individuals, and body horror (cannibalism/gore/mutilation of the human body) will be common as I’m more easily unsettled by these.
~~Stack notes~~
- Listed for each entry:
A rating on the scale of disturbance (ascending level):
*x = Characters need therapy
*xx = Makes me squirm
*xxx = Hard to stomach
*xxxx = Douse my eyes with bleach
*xxxxx = I need therapy
“CW” aka content warnings that cause the most psychological disgust/discomfort. This list is non-comprehensive so I suggest doing your own research.
- My MAL Score reflects whether or not I’d recommend reading, regardless of the disturbance rating:
If Score is <=3, I recommend skipping as the manga romanticises/glorifies/makes too light of the disturbing themes/topics.
If Score is >=7, I think the manga is well-written and deals meaningfully/with nuance the disturbing themes/topics. Characters are multidimensional, and the portrayal of their complexities/realities gives insight into the darker sides of the human experience/human nature. Disturbing scenes (if any) aren’t gratuitous or appealing to readers’ pleasure. I recommend reading if you’re aware of all content warnings, and are mature enough to know what to & not to take away from fiction.
- Contains BL (boys love)
