Ok, so you've reached an age when you're expected to only watch serious animes with complicated stories, deep characters and heavy topics. All those ridiculous school romances are far behind, they all use the same basic storyline, and all the harem fetishes give you spots anyway. And you're too old to bother about kids issues.
Or so you thought.
But there's still a kid in you that managed to survive somehow and you actually might feel good watching some stories about kids provided it's not completely stupid or cliché. It would please the kid you are still at heart.
So here is my take on romance or school kids stories that an old fart well into his fifties, meaning myself, enjoyed a lot. Maybe you'll find some good enough to wake up your childish self.
There are some spoilers in the descriptions below so don't read them if you want to avoid them.
Non Non Biyori
TV, 2013, 12 eps Me:- Author:10
This is a S1 comment but I watched all seasons, OVAs and film and this comment covers all.
I think this is the best show ever to describe the nostalgic feeling of being young, especially for someone like me who isn't anymore. No big drama, just the day to day life with the small experiences, troubles, joys that take all your time at this age. It's just incredibly touching to feel again the carelessness through these great characters, something we lost when we became adults. Somewhat, this show manages to induce this feeling without being cliché and it's such a joy to experience.
All the characters are great, I like Hikage, Kaede and Nazuho in particular but of course, the one who brings the appropriate level of crazyness and drives everything is Renge. Incredibly wonderful character. Her relationship with Kaede definitely brings the best and most emotional episodes.
The voice acting in general is amazing, particularly for the 4 characters I highlighted previously. Art and music are great too. I often rewatch the begining of the first episode of S1 just for the music played by Renge on the flute, it never fails to make me hilarious for some reason.
Loved it from beginning to end, rewatched it and will certainly rewatch it again.
Demi-chan wa Kataritai
TV, 2017, 12 eps Me:- Author:9
Well, I was not expecting to enjoy this show as much as I did, but there we are: I liked the characters a lot, the animation was very nice, the direction was pretty clever and funny, and the show remained true to its logic from beginning to end, focusing on the actual problems faced by the demis instead of trying to be an awkward allegory of some sort.
And by doing so, it actually manages to tell meaningful stories that can resonate with real-life issues. One of my daughter has Asperger syndrome and even though she's pretty normal in most aspects, she's easily saturated by noises and overwhelming social contacts, and that sometimes makes her react strangely. It was important for her and us (it took years) to understand these peculiarities and where they came from and she had some hard times at school because of them. Understanding them allowed her to take steps to avoid reaching her limits and for us to react properly. Her friends and her teachers also learned from that and it made life easier for her, although we never had the chance to have a teacher like Tetsuo (we would have loved to). The show manages to describe a journey for the girls, their family and their friends, which I find strangely similar to what we went through, and that's no cheap feat.
Really recommended, a great surprise.
Hyouka
TV, 2012, 22 eps Me:- Author:9
Now this is a rare thing: an anime show whose setting is in school and characters are a group of students, and still does not focus at all on romance or relationships issues. The main drive here is to solve small mysteries of their daily lives, and doing so, depict the growing relationship between the four teenagers in a realistic and lively way. The characters are well shaped and pretty likable, they are complex enough to carry the watcher from beginning to end with much enjoyment. The direction is pretty clever and the voice actors did a great job on this one. Adapted from full novels, it avoids using all the cheap tricks so common in anime and light novel and that's a real joy to experience. Really recommended.
Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai
TV, 2018, 13 eps Me:- Author:9
One of my all time favorites (including the film, I consider them as a whole show, watching the film without having watched the serie makes no sense).
I really liked all the characters, their relationships, the animation, the direction, the music. The show is filled with many powerful and tender moments. The love build-up between the two main characters feels very genuine and all the characters are very likable, they all are very decent people without being cheesy.
The show is also very delicately handling difficult topics and is managing this through a well-balanced mix of drama and comedy.
Rewatching is very rewarding, as they are a lot of details you can easily miss in the first watch. Give it a try.
Sora yori mo Tooi Basho
TV, 2018, 13 eps Me:- Author:9
Now that's a pretty good surprise. Yes, there are some chances in the scenario at the beginning which are barely believable, but for the rest, everything is very well executed: story is great, context is original, animation is very good, direction is precise, music is good and of course, characters are great and all manage to evolve in a very nice way. It's very easy to get attached to these young ladies. I particularly liked the scene at the end when the scientists are quite sad that they leave, it feels very true.
There's a real sense of adventure coming out of this anime and it really manages to convey the impact on each girl from this exceptional experience. And there's a vast range of feelings and topics explored in such a small amount of time in a very balanced way.
Really a great show, congratulations to the makers.
Mieruko-chan
TV, 2021, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
Like many other people, I really found the fan service of this show unwelcome and I wondered at some point if I would keep on watching it just for that. But it tends to fade after a few episodes and I gradually felt empathy towards the character of Miko given the increasingly harsh situations that she undergoes. The production is rather inventive, the visuals are good and the sound work is interesting. It is clearly a series worth seeing, probably the most interesting of season it was released, even if it means going to see the manga which is also a great work.
Nazo no Kanojo X
TV, 2012, 13 eps Me:- Author:7
I enjoyed this more than I expected. The art is a bit old fashioned, it's sometimes a bit repetitive with unneeded drama and and it's a bit difficult to understand in the anime why Urabe fell for Tsubaki, since the guy is sometimes so average. But there's a strange eroticism coming out of this anime and it becomes compelling to follow their interaction. No second season to be expected unfortunately but the manga provides a good completion to the story and see both Tsubaki showing his quality and Urabe softening, which is great. I'll probably will give it a rewatch at some point.
Just Because!
TV, 2017, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
I liked this anime. Not great, animation is really on low level side, but enjoyed the subdued atmosphere, the tone-down colors, the matter-of-fact voice acting, the minimum resort to cheap drama (even though it was still a bit too much).
I think most people misunderstand Natsume, that's why she gets so little love. I personally liked her character, a once lively person (as seen in the flashbacks from middle school) who slowly faded because of too much dedication on work and nurtured a one-way love as an excuse to avoid involving in relationships with boys. We don't see it in the anime, but it's quite likely that she gave a lot of thought about her exchange with Eita at the sanctuary: not only she realized then that indeed she had been fixed in this posture for years, of having too much work and an unrequited love, but that it blinded her from the fact that Eita had been loving her the whole time. She properly recollected many things about him after that and with subsequent events shown in the series, fell in love, probably truly this time.
I liked Eita too. Quite an interesting character with probably some autistic elements. The others are fine too, although I felt less drawn to them.
Maybe not a show which will appeal to people who are great fans of romance anime, but worth a try.
Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge
TV, 2016, 12 eps Me:- Author:7
I wasn't expecting much from this show, the basics looking very fragile from my spot. Good surprise, this show is actually quite funny, and manages to use the initial idea (Tanaka's lazyness) to the best. The characters are likable even though a bit cliché, their interactions are fun and the tongue-in-cheek humour works very well with me. Direction is imaginative and even if pace is slow, it perfectly fits the story. Same director as the wonderful Non Non Biyori. Manga is on par with the anime; showing very slow but nice character progress so a good way to prolong the anime if no other season comes.
Usagi Drop
TV, 2011, 11 eps Me:- Author:9
Obviously, it’s probably easier to be interested in this story when you’re a parent. But I think that there is a correctness in the characters of this series that makes that many people can be interested. The sobriety of this series is particularly appreciable, whether it is the animation, the direction or the voices, we remain in a soft and realistic register that makes the series very accessible to someone of my generation. I find in particular the tone of Daikichi very good, much less accentuated than the voices of men in many animes, which is appreciable. The relationship between Daikichi and Rin works well and the little adventures of their life are telling. A great success, I think.
Boku dake ga Inai Machi
TV, 2016, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
Of course, we have to accept the deus ex machina of Satoru's ability to travel in the time, never explained and a bit capricious (it comes when it suits the writer). But if we decide to ignore this weakness, there are many beautiful things in this series: the characters are well felt and endearing, the approached problematic quite powerful and some very strong passages (the passage at the end where we see Satoru’s mother taking care of him during his coma, for example), the whole is well edited and directed.
Tamayura: Hitotose
TV, 2011, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
If you like slice of life shows, this is definitely one to watch, with endearing characters and nice relationships. Nothing really groundbreaking but the show is well written and it's quite pleasant to watch these young ladies grow up. A confy show to watch during cold winter nights.
Yuru Camp△
TV, 2018, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
I came to this show as many people who liked Non Non Biyori (which I love) recommended it. And fact is that I liked it. It's nothing more than girls doing camping, but it's strangely soothing and the characters are nice enough. It's a bit repetitive - you basically only see girls marveling about camping tools, sites and food - and to be honest, I don't know what a third season could bring atop of the already existing material, but I also felt the same for the film and still liked it. That's probably a nice show to watch when you're stressed.
Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo.
TV, 2019, 12 eps Me:- Author:7
Nothing groundbreaking about this show apart from the frontal approach it takes to discuss teenagers sexuality, but it does so in a light way that avoids being vulgar. The characters are for the most part likable et realistic. Animation, direction and music are average, voice actors do a good job. A nice show to watch on lazy week-ends.
TV, 2023, 12 eps Me:- Author:7
As a manga reader, I admit my enjoyment for this anime is probably less than those who discover this story through animation. The thing is that I don't feel that this adaptation really brings much, as the direction is rather plain, the animation correct but not overwhelming, the music and voice acting rather vanilla and expected. Little is surprising and though the manga is not betrayed in any way, there's very little added to it going to anime.
It's not a bad show and is totally watchable, but maybe an anime adaptation was just not needed.
Aharen-san wa Hakarenai
TV, 2022, 12 eps Me:- Author:7
2022 has not been a great millesime for animes, and I really watched this one almost by despair. Well, that was a pleasant surprise and although this show doesn't really break new ground, it is light and funny (at least to me) with likable characters. Sometimes, that's good enough.
Bocchi the Rock!
TV, 2022, 12 eps Me:- Author:7
Was not very tempted but decided to give it go since the summer 2023 season doesn't offer much to my taste. And in the end, it's not bad. The autistic side of Bocchi is too much and all the scenes where she's supposed to have difficulties interacting with others are too overdone and not particularly funny, so that's a fat that could have been trimmed down. Otherwise, you get a range of characters that give the same feeling than Yuru Camp: they're nice, they have a personality well defined but without much nuances and the story doesn't hold much surprise. It's nice enough but nothing groundbreaking here.
One very positive aspect though: music animes very often try to present us with characters who are supposed to be musical genius but their music is actually quite poor. Paripi Kunmei or Vivy Fluorite come to mind here... Bocchi has the advantage that the music is credible. I can't say I would listen to that by myself, but it is good enough to sound rock and to be listened to without gritting your teeth. Good job from the music producer here.
Horimiya
TV, 2021, 13 eps Me:- Author:7
Focusing on an often ignored phase in romances, that is to say after the declaration, this sympathetic anime is an almost literal adaptation of the manga in its visuals, however discarding most of the side stories to focus on Hori and Miyamura. It’s cute, the characters are very nice and it puts in a good mood. Well, in the end, it may be a little too cute and nice: Miyamura is not very rock&roll and the oddities of Hori are not too credible, they look like plot devices to create stories. The show is a bit complacent in a bourgeois fluffy atmosphere, and childhood traumas seem to leave very little traces. The violence of both sides, whether it is that of Hori or that of Miyamura, does not seem to be particularly shown in a bad light, more like funny stuff, as if it is what makes this couple atypical. Not sure that’s the best message to send... However, talking about difficult things is not the goal of this anime and in terms of its objectives, it fulfills them rather well.
