Easily the weirdest shit on this list. This anime is based on a fake English-language learning parody book that actually just teaches offensive phrases instead of anything useful. Funny thing, you wouldn't even know that watching the show because it's just a loli fanservice magical girl anime! This is like the equivalent of making a Netflix superhero series based on a Maddox book. One in a million oddity.

Years earlier, there was an eroge visual novel called Triangle Hearts. In it, the main character had a little sister named Nanoha, and the creators thought it would make for a funny gag to create a fake PV for a magical girl series starring her. Little did they know it would go on to define a generation of otaku media.

This is an anime based on a reaaaally old anime. Such an interesting series in how it subverts the purpose of the original and goes totally experimental with it.

So, this is based on a visual novel. Nothing special, right? Well...I was shocked to see that it was a VN with no h-scenes. HUH???? By every objective measure, I would not have questioned the contrary had I not looked it up.

First, we have Anime Tenchou, which is the mascot of Animate, a real shop in Japan, who's also a Lucky Star character. Then we have Touhou Project, the Internet sensation bullet hell video game series for...some reason. Who greenlit this?

Technically originates from a manga, but in actuality, its source material is the creator of the series dying. That's why they made it the way it is in the first place.

Miyazaki drew a really short manga with a bunch of cool plane designs, and I guess he was like "alright time to turn this into a historical war drama film."

Based on mascots of a store known as "Gamers." They are still making anime with this series today, shockingly.

Kara no Kyoukai was originally just a random short story published in a magazine. Nobody knew who Nasu was, and he was probably very young at the time. Bet he couldn't have guessed it'd get an adaptation of this quality!

Based on short stories by a Japanese novelist. Kinda not that shocking, but it really doesn't happen that often.

This is based on an anime from the 60s?? Even weirder, it's done by a Korean animation studio that also worked on the game Library of Ruina???
