If you haven't seen the 1997 anime of Berserk or read the Manga, don't even bother watching this anime until you do. This isn't really a movie, it's more of an elongated re-cap of the events of the Golden Age arc of Berserk. For me, I really enjoyed it because I watched the 1997 version of the anime back in the day, and I really loved it. But, I didn't get around to this anime until now, so this felt like a blast of nostalgia for me. Because so much time has passed, this was like a beautifully animated (for 2012) reminder of what I liked about Berserk and I see it as a set up to a completion of the anime that never finished coming down the pipe.

With that being said, you will not like this anime if you aren't familiar with it. It gives no character backstory, it gives very little in the way of character connections. It's pretty much just all blood and "guts". Just action sequence after action sequence with a few dialogue scenes in between them to set the tone and tell you what's going on plot wise. I probably would've been pissed myself if I had watched this in 2012 when it first came out and expected it to pick up where it left off. But, because I've waited so long I already knew it didn't do that, so I wasn't disappointed.

I dug this remake/re-cap film. But, I can easily understand why it also gets negative reviews as well.
