I don't know what a lot of these reviewers were expecting. What harem besides maybe clannad can you look at through a microscope and not expect to find flaws when you search for them? To each their own I suppose.
I went in expecting very little tbh, but despite what I considered a pretty low score (I am starting to understand even ratings in the 6's have potential) I enjoyed the show. Does it utilize the traditional tropes? Yes. Is the main character a bit OP? Yeah. Did I go in expecting code geass? Hell no. I expected a goofy ass harem anime with magic, and that is what I was presented.
Now let me actually detail what I considered flaws despite low expectations:
1) The amount and variance of magic used was redundant and unexplorative despite great opportunities with the vast elements illustrated.
2) The usual harem issue of naive main character and immature relationship developments (but at least one character was straightforward).
3) Typically anticlimactic ending, but that is expected with harem anime as well.
There are more flaws, but I believe going in looking to enjoy it rather than scrutinize every blatant failed bit of potential would ruin nearly any anime. Same applies here.
In the end, I've seen worse, I've seen better, but I enjoyed it.
