In my opinion, Lycoris Recoil unintentionally became what YLIA (Your Lie in April) tries to be. YLIA tries hard to make you feel for the characters but it comes off as forced, and in the end the payoff falls flat (for some viewers). Lycoris Recoil main story is not very interesting, but the character chemistry between the main pair was the best part of the show, and the quiet girl eventually wins your sympathy as it becomes evident she develops a crush on the lively and energetic girl. If you ignore the last episode it will feel like a YLIA type story but more genuine. If you watched YLIA but didn't feel it, watch Lycoris Recoil up until the last episode knowing the same fate happens (it starts to be obvious a few episodes prior). Maybe don't watch the last episode because it's a clusterfk that will undo all the emotional payoff.
