Both are cyberpunk renditions involving special branches of the police in cases in which androids, malfunctioning or being targeted, happen to raise some interesting ethical questions. as many of our own doings are not proper actions (do not have clearly articulated intentions), with these dools, boomers and gynoids, there are boundaries being crossed or confused. but aren't they also being mixed in the humans themselves?

Gunbuster (1988) serves as a transition work between Ideon (1982) and Lagann. The combining robot (合体!) with a star on forehead, the desperate attempt to preserve human life and the dangers involving doing it, the alien forces which aim to stop exponential processes, the “believe in me believing in you” and the “aim for the top” are all reworked by Imaishi, years later.

Kidou Senshi Gundam I

Mobile Suit Gundam I (1981) features Amuro, a boy who by the circumstances is made pilot of the giant robot Gundam. After traumatic events he is in a room, lied on the bed in panic, not willing to pilot again, just as Shinji in several moments of Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995). There the underage thing is made a permanent requirement, newtype or not.
