I score anime and manga more on how much I liked it rather than how technically great it was. I like the GoodReads scoring better than the MyAnimeList scoring. GoodReads uses 5 stars, like this:

5- It was amazing
4- I really liked it
3- I liked it
2- It was OK
1- I didn't like it

So I like to try to double that scoring when I'm scoring here... but I generally don't give below a 5 (on MyAnimeList) unless I really, really didn't like the anime/ manga. It's not a perfect system, but I like it better than rating on technical aspects alone.

As for dropped anime, and especially dropped manga... Sometimes it's stuff I really didn't like, or simply had no interest in reading. Other times, though, it's stuff that didn't grab my interest at the time. There's always a chance I'll pick something back up.
