I was extremely disappointed in the denouement of this story. Spoilers ahead:
The fact that ALL of Violet's character development goes to the WC in this movie is just sad. Throughout the series, Violet learns to be independent, learns to understand others and even herself, and by the end of the movie she ends up leaving everything to stay on an island (in the middle of nowhere) just because Gilbert wants her to. In fact, that's what she would have done right at the beginning of the series, in the flashback when Gilbert met her and she used to
...
be his “tool”. In theory she is not his “tool” anymore by the end of the movie, but this is contradictory, since, at the ending she decides to follow him around again, like a lapdog... that really grates on me.
I also would have liked Gilbert x Violet relationship to have remained similar to a father and daughter relationship... but, instead they had to imply that they are in love with each other (facepalm)… When they hug and he says something like, "I've always wanted to do this"... ugh, honestly, it grossed me out. I mean, since she was 12 years old you wanted what exactly? UGH…That man should not be a teacher (cries). I know it's a fictional story, but it's still grooming. Some will say that Violet in the movie is 18 years old and in the historical context in which the movie takes place those things were normal… (WTF)... well, I don't care, for me it's still not enough reason for you to fall in love with a minor and over whom you have power. So I'm sorry, but simply their (romantic) relationship disgusts me. I know a lot of people want to overlook this and imagine a paternal/platonic relationship between them but, don't be fooled, the president is the one they put in the "father" role for Violet and not Gilbert. It's like this. If Gilbert was her father she would have opened her wings, but she stays with him forever, I mean, FOREVER… because she loves him... anyway... I don’t want to think about this matter again... NEXT.
Gilbert's character in the movie is simply unbearable. I'm sorry, but it's the truth.
I also don't like that they try to make a super-fast and forced speech about the consequences or aftermath of the war. It doesn't sound convincing tho, since that's not the main theme of the movie. Instead, it seems that the purpose of the film is none other than to make you cry your eyes out and to expose sappy themes that would make the viewer cry.
Regarding the story of the sick child... well yes, very sad all, it's a nice story and I’m sorry for the poor kid, but I would have preferred it to have been about the secondary characters close to Violet. What is their story? What happened to them now with the telephone thing? I don't think I'm the only one who would have appreciated to know more about them and to know what will happen with their lives... I mean, I know this story is based on the light novel and everything but I don’t know I guess then I wouldn’t like the LN if I read it.
Regarding the story of the girl who travels to know Violet's story... was it really necessary to put another unbearable character in the movie? The girl writes a letter to her parents as she travels the world, like, “I'm a b*tch, but, yeah I love you parents” ... girl... tell them when you're home, or I don’t know… maybe try to behave better in the future (?). I don't know... I mean, I don't even care... I understand that they use her as a way to know Violet's story, to know what happened to her, but there was no other way to do it? I don't know, it didn't convince me at all. Very, very unnecessary story, honestly.
Apart from all my complaints, I have to say that, as always, the animation has been beautiful and for that alone it deserves a pass. But, in terms of story and character development, the movie is a complete mess (under my humble opinion).
I think it is very overrated.
Me ha decepcionado enormemente el desenlace de esta historia. A continuación, spoilers:
El hecho de que TODO el desarrollo del personaje de Violet se vaya por el retrete en esta película es simplemente triste. A lo largo de la serie, Violet aprende a ser independiente, aprende a relacionarse con los demás y, al final de la peli acaba dejándolo todo para quedarse en una isla (en mitad de la nada) solo porque Gilbert así lo quiere. De hecho, eso es lo que ella hubiera hecho justo al principio de la serie, en los flashback de cuando se conocieron. En teoría ella no es su herramienta al final de la peli, pero esto es contradictorio con el final que tiene, ya que ella decide seguirle a él, como un perrito faldero… eso me enerva.
También me hubiera gustado que la relacion Gilbert x Violet hubiera permanecido como la de un padre y una hija… pero en cambio tuvieron que dar a entender que están enamorados el uno del otro (facepalm). Cuando se abrazan y él dice algo como: “siempre quise hacer esto”… ugh, sinceramente, me dio asco. Es decir, desde que ella tenía 12 años qué era lo que querías exactamente? Ese hombre no debería ser profesor (lloros). Se que es una historia ficticia, pero sigue siendo grooming. Algunos dirán que Violet en la película tiene 18 años y que en el contexto histórico en el que se desarrolla la película esas cosas eran normales… bueno, no me importa, para mí sigue sin ser motivo suficiente para que te enamores de una menor y sobre la que tienes poder. Así que lo siento, pero simplemente su relación (romántica) me da asco. Se que mucha gente quiere pasar esto por alto e imaginarse una relación paternal/platónica entre ellos pero, que no os engañen, el presidente es al que ponen en el papel de “padre” y no a Gilbert. Es así. Si fuese su padre ella hubiera abierto las alas, pero ella permanece con él para siempre, es decir, PARA SIEMPRE... Porque ella lo ama… en fin… sin comentarios… no quiero pensar más en este tema jamás... SIGUIENTE.
El personaje de Gilbert en la película es, simplemente, insoportable. Lo siento, pero es la verdad.
Tampoco me gusta que intentan hacer un discurso súper rápido y forzado sobre las consecuencias o secuelas de la guerra, pero no llega a convencer, ya que ese no es el tema principal de la película. En cambio, parece que la finalidad de la película no es otra que hacerte llorar como un descosido y exponer temas sensibleros que consigan hacer llorar al espectador.
Respecto a la historia del niño enfermo… pues si, muy triste todo, es una historia bonita y pobre chiquillo, pero hubiera preferido que hubiera tratado sobre los personajes secundarios cercanos a Violet. Cual es su historia? Que fue de cada uno de ellos con el tema del teléfono? No creo ser la única que hubiese agradecido saber más de ellos y saber que pasará con su vida… Quiero decir, sé que esta historia está basada en la novela (LN) y todo, pero no sé... supongo que entonces no me gustará la LN si la leo.
Respecto a la historia de la chica esa que viaja para conocer la historia de Violet… ¿era en realidad necesario meter a otro personaje insoportable en la película? La chica le escribe una carta a sus padres mientras recorre el mundo, en plan, "soy una z*rra, pero os quiero"… chica… díselo cuando estés en casa o, no sé, quizás intenta comportarte mejor con ellos en el futuro (?). No sé… es decir, es que ni me importa… entiendo que la usan como medio para conocer la historia de Violet, para saber qué fue de ella, pero no había otra forma de hacerlo? No sé, no me convenció nada. Historia muy, muy innecesaria, sinceramente.
Aparte de todas mis quejas, he de decir que, como siempre, la animación ha sido una maravilla y que solo por eso ya se merece aprobar. Pero, en cuanto a la historia y al desarrollo de personajes, la película es un desastre (bajo mi humilde opinión).
Pienso que está muy sobrevalorada.

Nasty taste in my mouth: Spoilers: from the middle of the story onwards I started to be disappointed. I mean, him staying with her and not reporting to the police, etc., already seems crazy to me, but I liked the fact that in the beginning he seemed genuinely not interested (romantically) in her, but helping her, and I applauded that.
