The comedy style, I think. It plays some jokes on the Japanese rural life, it's kinda otaku-aware, mature (not as in, porny; I mean actually catered for seinen demographics) and both are generally very fun - a bit weird? - series.

Both are series about uh, band guys falling in love with each other. Incidentally, in both most characters have complex networks of relationships and at least some sort of back story, that may or may not be tragic.

Barakamon

I'm kinda surprised nobody has recommended this yet, to tell the truth. I feel like Barakamon is the spiritual sucessor to Moyashimon, and the name is only the beginning of similarities. Both stories are "slice of life" of sorts, that happen in rural places, involving young adults. While in Barakamon the main character moves from the city to the countryside, so to speak, in Moyashimon the character moves from the countryside to the city. Both rely heavily on comedy, and the comedy is similar - although Moyashimon is a bit more sexualized than Barakamon - since both make fun of everyday ocurrences with a bit of exaggeration and parodyzing. Also, in Moyashimon, there's a guy who can see bacteriae, so it's more into the fantasy side of things than Barakamon. Either way, both are nice slice-of-life series that are sure to lighten your mood.

I agree that both are VERY similar, considering both the premise, tragic pasts, church plays an important role, the characters' mission, the slash fanservice, the character's personalities and everything. I was always reminded of 07-Ghost while watching Hakkenden even though it's been years.

Hourou Musuko

The way I see it, this is one of the series from the list that resembles H&C the most. Both aired on noitaminA, though one came ~6 years before the other. To begin with, both share a delicate watercolor-like art that is very meaningful, considering how they also deal with delicate themes - those of love, meaningful relationships, conflict, identity. Both are amazingly human in that sense. The main theme or fact that the cast of Hourou Musuko is made of middle schoolers may raise some doubts, but don't judge based on those. Children are more complex than we like to think once we grow up, and so is sexuality. Hourou Musuko actually takes its issues seriously, and if you don't believe this, one episode would be enough to convince you. Both series are really mature in their ways of presenting every theme, and more importantly, aren't afraid to recognize that the world isn't black and white. You can try to foresee what is going to happen, but you're likely to be proven wrong. They're also slow series, with a little comedy here and there, and very memorable and well-done dramatic times. The kind that makes your heart and your eyes ache. I highly recommend both series for anyone who is willing to open their heart, feel and think about life.

Sotsugyou M: Ore-tachi no Carnival

I'm surprised there isn't a recommendation for this yet. Both are very similar in many ways. You see, there is an all-boys school; In this school, there is a (rather crazy) student council with a weird president. Mr. Weird President forces a bunch of random pretty guys, that are popular in the school for whatever reason, to crossdress. The guys aren't really amused at first, but end up engaging in it anyway, getting to know each other better, and having fun. This story will sound really familiar if you've seen either anime. In this sense, both are about friendship and acceptance, but above that there is the comedy. The comedy, for both, is mostly about making fun of its own genre, mocking BL tropes, and also gay jokes and such. References and inside jokes are commonplace, too. In both cases, the actual BL content is limited to insinuations. As for the basic difference - while Princess Princess is an actual series, and so has quite a back story going on and more developed characters, Graduation M only has 2 OVAs, so it's rather vague. If you take them at face value, both will look kinda silly and shallow. They're to be taken with a grain of salt, though. In conclusion, if you had fun with one of them, you're likely to enjoy the other, too.
