After three epsisodes, pleasantly surprised and impressed by this show. I wasn't expecting much, just another bland romcom. But I was immediately captured by two things:
1) the MC is an ordinary guy. Not an outcast, or weirdo, or self-loathing reject. He has friends. He is able to talk normally to his classmates, both boys and girls, without throwing a nervous fit. They think he is OK. There is nothing "special" about him and that is such a relief. He is considerate. He is willing to help out. He is willing to improve. His strength is in fact that he takes the time to actually talk
...
to people, listen to them and think about what they are trying to say.
2) there a are quite a few other characters and they also feel like real people. They talk about real things, and seem like a good approximation of real Japanese teenagers.
The story is that the MC was obsessed with the prettiest girl in his class and became notorious for always chasing her. He has now matured enough to realize that this was poor behaviour on his part. However, she had become used to him being there and isn't certain how to deal with that. It is a fairly basic storyline but really just serves as the framing device for a snapshot of a group of young adults growing up and starting to face emotional maturity.
The dialogue is well written and interesting. The artwork is fairly standard to the point where it can be hard to tell the floppy haired boys apart. I don't expect shocking revelations or drama from this show, just light banter and a growing emotional awareness.

The music is superb. Purely as an introduction to the passion and tradition of shamisen and acoompanying song this anime could not have been better. I will always be grateful to have been given this chance to experience that for the first time. And not just one or two performances: the show features multiple Japanese artists playing together or alone, sometimes introducing us to new ideas, sometimes playing the same piece but made individual through their own styles.
However. The excellent music and good supporting artwork are let down by the story and characters. The main character is The Troubled but Brilliant Artist in Search
...
of His Own Sound. A cliché in service of a cliché. He is silent, moody, self-obsessed and generally an asshole to everyone. But they always seem to forgive him because he is a genius. We may be sure he's a genius because everyone tells us over and over again.
Every so often the script, will chuck in a sequence where he's briefly helpful, but its always all about him in the end. It takes some hard work to produce such a consistently unlikeable hero so I guess that is something.
The other characters are mostly groupies in the Setsu roadshow. All the characters in ep1 acknowledge his greatness and disappear forever. The members of the shamisen club, two of who had never even expressed interest in playing shamisen before and come to think of it why did they even join? - mutter about his assholery but take it because of his greatness. All the girls love him. Cats refuse to take a dump if he is near.
His mother is a shonen supervillain which would be fine in a more extreme setting like a Birdie Wing golf course but here it is just weird.
Oh well. As a celebration of music, a towering crescendo. As a character piece, an irritating twang.

So far, an excellent and deeply involving character study. Hime is a girl who can pretend to near perfection in her goal of making everyone like her. Mitsuki cannot understand pretence, with the result that noone likes her. Yet both must act the part of affectionate schoolmates in a cafe modelled on yuri classics like Maria Watches Over Us.
Hime and Mitsuki must go on a difficult and emotional journey as the both navigate their feelings while maintaining their public and private facades. Is what they express what they really feel, or is it part on the act? Will they survive an avid cafe clientele

This isn't a show about fluffy, fantasy relationships. It is about very real characters fighting to understand and be understood, and often making poor decisions along the way.

A feel good romantic comedy where not much happens and the story line every week is will they/won't they get embarrassed again like twelbe year olds at the thought of holding hands or being partially naked. This married couple who have lived together in the one tiny room for months.
Season one was pretty interesting with the mystery of Tsukasa' origins. But so far in s2 that has been completely replaced with perpetual blushing and adults acting in a cutesy way that is either completely unrealistic or the reason Japan doesn't make children any more.
The art is as bland as the characters have become, but after
...
all, the artists don't have to do much except depict them eating and ambling slowly from place to place. The side characters only pop up from time to time to fulfil the important job of not advancing the plot at all.
Did I mention the word bland?

Lets get one thing out of the way: if you expect to see anyone being reborn to master any blades, you're in for a disappointment. The heroine is reincarnated as one of the few people to understand how mana works, and essentially uses that to nuke anything that gets in her way.
In her previous life she was a king, but in this life she just wants to have fun as a fighter without all that responsibility. This scenario in itself is a giant improvement over the standard isekai formula of Japanese game-playing loser reborn to live out a power/sex fantasy. The heroine is fun to
...
watch, as every terrifying monster or opponent provokes only joy and anticipation in her, much to the consternation of her companions.
Her companions are a harem of standard types, the sweet one, the tsundere but nice one, the insecure but nice one.
The plot is ok, there are monsters to be fought against a background of political intrigue between the lowlands and their overlords on floating mountains.
The animation gets a bit cheap after a couple of episodes.
All in all, harmless fun.

As an isekai about a man transformed into a sword, this show was immediately elevated by not having the protagonist as the main hero of the story. As a (mostly) inanimate object, he can only ever be a supporting character, which means that we can avoid the worst tropes of this genre. He isn't over-powered, he doesn't have a sex slave or a harem, and his abilities exist in service of the story rather than the centrepiece. In fact, I don't even know why this needs to be an isekai at all, as his previous life has no bearing on the story as told in
...
the anime, which could just as easily been a purely fantasy tale.
The story is really about Fran, the young beast girl who finds the sword and with it a way to escape slavery and fulfill her dream of evolving into a stronger form of herself. This therefore becomes a character-driven story, as we follow Fran through her journey, with the sword providing help and advice. But it is still Fran who has to take the risks and find the courage to overcome the dangers of adventuring and the prejudices that exist in this world against her kind.
Fran really steals the show, her voice actress delivering cool dead pan reactions to anyone who tries to patronize her. The relationship between her and Teacher, the sword, is excellent, a purely father-daughter relationship with no creepy elements.
The one major demerit for me was the reliance on RPG elements: skill lists, spell lists, levelling... I don't know who likes this stuff, None of it means anything, or provides any character development or emotional stakes. What is the difference between Fire level 6 and Inferno level 3? Who knows? Who cares? None of it is really earned and none of it matters. It is just a device to justify a character winning a fight by pulling something new out of their arse.
Overall, it is a fairly standard story in a very standard fantasy RPG world but made worthwhile by the main duo.

An office romance between two co-workers, one of whom has some unusual powers. I had high hopes for this at the start. The characters look good, his ice powers might make for some original situations, and above all I was glad to see a romance between grown adults for a change. I had presumed that characters in their twenties, having already gone through school and college, with some experience of adult life, would act with more maturity and decisiveness, at least some of the time, than we normally see in high school romances.
No. Unfortunately everyone in the show has the emotional development of a
...
fifteen year old. No, that's unfair, even Takagi-san had a far more developed sense of what she wanted and how to get there than these people. They mug and blush and look flustered. They panic and struggle with the smallest decisions that might advance their romantic position. Noone does anything.
I love romcoms and slice of life - most of the time. Not much really has to happen. They are carried by interesting characters and a small but steady development in the characters's relationships. What do we have here. He blushes a lot and makes popsicles. She blushes a lot and owns a cat. When he suffers anxiety a mini-ice storm happens. He suffers a lot of anxiety. That is it for his ice gimmick. She supposedly has difficulty expressing her feelings, but in anime 90% of all characters have difficulty expressing their feelings, and it is irrelevant anyhow because all the other characters in this show knows exactly how she feels about him anyway.
As for development... it started OK for the first few episodes and then stalled. They have exchanged gifts. They have been thoughtful and attentive. They like each other. But noone makes a move, noone takes a risk, noone even asks the other on a date even though they have already been on a date.... even Kubo-san, a show about the wimpiest boy on the planet has better progression...
I really hope things start moving again. Right now it is starting to stagnate, and that is a pity.

A sweet, very lightweight romance and a poor man's Teasing Master Takagi-san. The main character leads a quiet life with noone even noticing if he's there until Kubo, the pretty girl who sits next to him in class, starts paying attention to him. Gentle comedy ensues.
It is very obvious she has a crush on him and only teases him very gently, but rather inserts herself in his life.
All this is a pleasant and relaxing blandness. The main issue is the main character. In order to demonstrate why he has been socially invisible, pains have been taken to make him as bland, unassertive, and self effacing
...
as
possible. In the world of anime, making an MC that is even more boring than the rest is quite an achievement. Why s popular girl would want to spend time with him is anyone's guess.
Still, if you enjoy a sweet, harmless 20 mins, this show could be for you.

What is this show about? The story is simple enough, but what is the point of it? The all-powerful demon lord is reborn as the all-powerful demon lord. He chooses to go to demon lord academy. Why? It seems he knows the entire curriculum already, and if he wanted to be demon lord again, he could just steam roller his way back into position immediately. On the other hand, if he doesn't want to be demon lord again, why go to the academy at all?
Here we have the central confusion. The main character is so powerful that he has no challenges to overcome. He
...
has no journey to make, no desire to fulfill. He doesn't seem to want anything much except cheese mushroom pie. So what is this story about?
Is it about friendship, making this a sort of fantasy slice of life show? That would be fair enough. I like Sasha and Misha, and he does treat them with kindness and generosity. But are they friends? He makes it very clear that he is in charge, deciding who gets to join their group. He insists his vassals acknowledge him as the true demon lord. Their relationship does not have the equality and mutual reliance of friendship. It is more like master and pet.
I don't dislike this show, in fact I enjoy quite a bit of it. Yet, after every episode, I wonder: what was the point?

Frustrating. I am sure there is a good story (four stories?) buried in here. I think the main character is interesting and well acted of course. I think this could have been great... if they had only slowed down for a minute!
Side characters are introduced and disappear and pop up again. Wait, that guy was, what, an architect? Or something. Those guys hanging around with nothing to do except dress up nicely were... what again? I am sure I've seen them before. Wait, that girl was at a fancy school for the elite and now she's a chambermaid (what would her parents think)?
Frustrating. That guy
...
is the demon lord and that is terrible.. but the demons are just fluffy creatures living in a wood and they love him... what is this all about?
She's just met him... now they're in love... when did that happen?
12 episodes for four stories and dozens of characters. It is just too much. Such a pity.
