I could see how you found the story to be a bit lacking, as it seems like a style over substance kind of show. I thought the characters were really well done though. The last few episodes with Miki and the rappers really put it over the edge for me. I've been in a bit of a Yuasa kick recently, and I think I'm gonna check out Kemonozume next.
Alright so I just finished Mononoke, and it was pretty good. The art style was beautiful, as well as most of the drama (the first arc was my favorite). I kinda didn't like that there wasn't any story building between arcs though. It felt like like a bunch of short stories as opposed to an episodic series if you know what I mean. Overall I'd give it an 8/10. Solid choice.
I've been eyeing Mononoke for awhile, so I can definitely work with that. I should ask, however, is the prequel listed on MAL necessary? I don't want to be lost coming into the series. For you, I'll put up https://myanimelist.net/anime/306/Abenobashi_Mahou%E2%98%86Shoutengai since I can't find very many options of things that you haven't seen. It's done by some of the same teams as Eva and FLCL, so hopefully you like it. If that doesn't work, I have some shorter manga that I could recommend.
Hey so I'm looking to do an anime trade with someone for something that's under 13 episodes. You up for it? I'll take a movie if that's easier. I'm about to finish Kaiba so I'm looking for something mentally and visually stimulating if you have anything for me.
I don't usually say this..but thank you for the friend request. I checked your fb profile and I really like the art that you're making. Now I am downloading Kaiji The Ultimate Survivor and I hope it is good. As a friendly advide (I am not following Digibro, and I don't take his commentaries seriously), and I recommend that you do the same...because in his reviewes he sees art more with his eyes than the eyes of the artist..Cheers
It's not a 1:1 comparison, but Astro Fighter Sunred is a comedic series made up of short episodes like Detroit Metal City. Plays on superhero tropes in some really funny ways, especially with General Vamp. Just thought I'd throw that recommendation out there :).
I generally give very high score because of circumstances and my own personal enjoyment. Review scores are different.
I really liked Haibane Renmei, but you may not like because it shares similar atmosphere as Serial Experiment Lain. It's been a while since I've remembered Lain properly, but Haibane Renmei is a more straight forward and a lot lighter.
Birdy the Mighty and Noein have the same director and couple of the same animators so I'm pretty biased about it.
Noein's plot doesn't flow well properly and the characters are rather meh, but I love the concept of time travel and especially after seeing it again at a much older age.
I've found the Birdy the Mighty Decode 02 to have a really good balance of action and story. It's nothing original (it's like Naruto + GitS SAC 2nd GIG in a nutshell) but I came with little expectations for it especially after the mediocre first season.
I like your taste in cartoons. I've been mostly watching The Amazing World of Gumball, and I can't wait for the Samurai Jack reboot. I just hope it doesn't get ruined like the Powerpuff Girls and Teen Titans.
Oh man, Gundam. The archive panic is real. I've been meaning to get into it for quite some time now, it's just that outside of the original, I wouldn't know where else to go from there. I'd have to make a list to keep track of what order to watch it in, like what I did with Tenchi Muyo a friend and I are in the middle of watching. (We call it the "Tenchi Black Hole", and we basically take "turns" as to where to steer our "ship".)

I hope you at least enjoyed Abenobashi?
