I rate anime by placing each completed title in it's appropriate place on a well-ordered list of every anime I've watched in order from my most favorite anime to my most hated. I then draw cut-off lines wherever I feel fit. With this system, no score has a set "definition" as I am constantly debating myself as to where the cutoffs belong. However, if you are curious what the scores generally look like, I explain the current categories below:
- That was so horrible that for the entire duration of the program I doubted that I would ever be able to watch another anime in my life. What a complete waste of the producers time and efforts to make such a sad excuse for a “show”. Well, at least I can look back at such miserable episodes and have a good laugh about it.
- Not much better than a 1, but looks kind of like the creators were at least a bit interested in creating a decent show. It’s just too bad it was still awful.
- This is perhaps the worst rating a show could get. These shows were really not good, but they weren’t so bad that it was slightly humorous. Rather, they were just painfully dull and repetitive and felt like a chore to finish.
- These titles I pity because they were clearly solid attempts at good productions, but a few elements held them back. They weren’t necessarily bad, but if a few things were done differently then they just might have been enjoyable.
- This is the first score category with titles that I actually enjoyed watching. They weren’t anything to write home about, but they each had something special to take away.
- These shows were really good! I thoroughly enjoyed the majority of the episodes. However, they did not quite resonate with me.
- These titles were actually works of art. Many of these have phenomenal soundtracks, unique and beautiful animation, memorable characters, et cetera. At the end of the show I really felt like I went on a journey that only anime could pave the way for. They didn’t quite change my life, however.
- These shows were incredibly inspiring. I likely cried at least five times throughout the production, sometimes way more. The story was so inspiring that I keep reflecting on it to this day. Of course these shows are polished everywhere else with great sounds and visuals that enrich the storytelling.
- These are the shows that I’ll remember forever. Each one was a powerful part of my life at the time and are what I consider to be some of the best anime I have ever watched (along with the 10s obviously).
- At the end of these shows I contemplated my life for many days or even weeks at their conclusion wondering how I will ever be able to enjoy my life again now that these gripping tales have reached an end.
