As an overall product, the anime adaptation is still far above the average industry standard but I think it failed remarkably to live up to its expectations and is a perfect example of the double-edged nature of hype. Mappa was never going to meet the absurd expectations in the first place because even if the production quality in every single aspect was state-of-the-art, the content this season adapts isn't particularly good in my opinion (but which I was expecting the audiovisuals to carry more than they did).

Some aspects of the production like the art and character acting were great while others like the directing, animation and voice acting were either underwhelming or inconsistent. I was expecting CSM to receive the type of adaptation that Bleach TYBW actually got, a highly streamlined and polished ambitious product which elevated the original source material in many ways; but I find the anime so far to be vastly inferior to the manga (which is a shame because the cinematic nature of the manga screams that it be returned to the screen). Mappa's sluggish pacing especially does it no favours and they should've simply saved that for the chaotic second half of the story than use it on the mundane first half.

I still look forward to the second season of course and hope Mappa doesn't separate the Bomb Devil arc into a movie, but I'm also highly curious as to how they'll manage the zerg rush that is everything International Assassins arc onward when the first season felt this coarse.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
