“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.”
- Patrick Rothfuss, The Wise Man's Fear.
"My heart is a colored pencil but my brain is an eraser" - George Watsky, Tiny Golwing Screens Pt. 2
“I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me.” - Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind
"Fuck you if you love a car for its paint job
Love you if you love a car for the road trips
Show me the miles and your arms and the pink scar
Where the doctor had to pull out all the bone chips
Cuz you were pressing on the gas just a bit hard
Right in the moment where the road curved a bit sharp
And when you woke up, somebody was unclipping your seat belt
and pulling you from the open window of your flipped car - George Watsky, Sloppy Seconds
“The best lies about me are the ones I told.” - Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind
“You can divide infinity an infinite number of times, and the resulting pieces will still be infinitely large,” Uresh said in his odd Lenatti accent. “But if you divide a non-infinite number an infinite number of times the resulting pieces are non-infinitely small. Since they are non-infinitely small, but there are an infinite number of them, if you add them back together, their sum is infinite. This implies any number is, in fact, infinite.”
“Wow,” Elodin said after a long pause. He leveled a serious finger at the Lenatti man. “Uresh. Your next assignment is to have sex. If you do not know how to do this, see me after class.” - Patrick Rothfuss, The Wise Man's Fear
There's always someone more important
Yes I love Patrick Rothfuss, and if you enjoy reading fantasy books I cannot recommend the Kingkiller Chronicles highly enough, even after reading over a hundred books, they redefined for me what a story could be.
All reviews contain spoilers, that's why they are here instead of on each anime's review page.
If you read any of these please comment your thoughts on my profile, I would love to hear your opinion \o/ (just use spoilers if need be to keep others from being spoiled :3 )
My reviews for some anime I've watched. I don't specifically review any certain anime, just ones that I felt like reviewing, not just my favorites.
(Most of this is a run through of the story with my thoughts, for a simpler overall review see the last paragraph at the bottom)
Just got through School Days and wanted to write a review of it, more for myself to look back on but for others as well. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it before reading, regardless of the score I think it's worth watching, and is a show that would be ruined by spoilers.
So I went into School Days knowing nothing. It was sitting on my crunchyroll list forever and I decided I wanted to watch a romance anime, I was thinking I had heard something strange about it but after a few eps I figured it had to have been a different anime... Oh boy was I wrong.
It starts like a typical romance anime, but with the main character being above average levels of cringe. He relies on his classmate (Sekai) to hook him up with the girl he likes (Kotonha) because he is too scared to, and has her basically steer the relationship for him because he is too dense to understand the other girls feelings.
As Kotonha works to be more outgoing and do more 'things' with Makoto he is already growing bored and cheating on her with Sekai who has harbored feelings for him this whole time. Sekai urges him to break up with Kotonha to avoid hurting her feelings any further but Makoto starts to show his true colors. He strings Kotonha along as long as he can, not breaking up with her directly but telling other people they are apart, while he plays with both girls hearts.
It comes to a T when he is walking to take out the trash with a classmate and meets Kotonha taking out the trash, forced to choose between Kotonha and Sekai he dumps Kotonha. I thought it was quite fitting that he dumped her as they were taking out the trash, some symbolism for his respect for her.
From her the show begins a spiral into chaos. Kotonha is left broken, she was already being bullied as she told everyone they were still dating while Makoto told them they weren't behind her back, then he dumps her without any warning and she is left all alone, she breaks down mentally calling his blocked number over and over.
A horrible way for him to end their relationship, well at least now they are through and he can be faithful to Sekai- yea no, we all knew that wouldn't happen. Setsuna (Sekai's best friend) urges Makoto over and over to be faithful to her. Setsuna will be moving away and as Sekai's seemingly only friend, and childhood friend she wishes Makoto to take her place keeping Sekai happy and safe. And what does Makoto do? He immediately cheats on her with the next girl that confesses to him. He does not care about any of the girls feelings, he only cares about sex.
As Setsuna leaves the girls throw a party celebrating the school fair, but in reality its a showing for the video they took of the 'break room' where all the couples went to sleep together during the fair, and Sekai sees Makoto sleeping with another girl. She is destroyed, her best friend leaves her, and now she learns the boy she fell in love with doesn't truly care about her.
As she reels from all this hiding in her room Makoto is sleeping with every girl he can, not a care given to Sekai now that he can't sleep with her, to make things even worse, Sekai is pregnant. Its never really shown whether or not she faked the pregnancy to bring Makoto back to her, or if she really was pregnant. I prefer to think that the only reason she would go back to Makoto would be if she was actually pregnant with his child... but all things considered I could just as easily believe she would fake it to get back with him. Regardless I do lean towards her actually being pregnant which I'll explain further on.
As the school catches wind of this noone will sleep with Makoto anymore, so he resigns himself to staying with Sekai... until he sees Kotonha and finds out she still has feelings for him. (What a twist for him to cheat on Sekai with Kotonha). He tells Sekai he will be with Kotonha and then emails her"Kotonha knows of a good 'clinic' " I already thought he was the lowest of the low, but to say that, and in an email after leaving her, I was so mad. I didn't think he could get any worse until when Sekai confronts him about it he stands by it and kisses Kotonha right in her face.
Sekai is broken and lost. She has been abandoned by everyone and has to choose to either lose the baby or raise it on her own without Makoto. She loses it and stabs Makoto, over and over killing him. In my opinion being pregnant with his baby is what pushed her over the edge and kill him. I think if she wasn't really pregnant just losing Makoto would have hurt her for a long time but she would have moved past it. I think the thought of being abandoned by the man she loved, even after he impregnated her, and refused to be there for her, leaving her to deal with ti on her own, pushed her over the edge.
Crying alone in her room she receives an email from Makoto, "Meet me on the roof" she knows who its from. She goes to the roof, knife hidden in her jacket and is confronted by Kotonha. The only question left in Kotonha's mind is if Sekai was lying about being pregnant...after a gruesome series of events she concludes she wasn't.
I still choose to believe Sekai was pregnant in spite of this, in my opinion no matter what Kotonha saw she would have seen what she wanted to, that there was no way Sekai could have had Makoto's baby. The way she would have conversations with him on her phone, even when it was off showcases her insanity and how she could force her own beliefs.
And the show ends. I never expected this from it, I was hoping for Makoto to break up with Kotonha once he realized his feelings for Sekai. I really like Sekai's character, and her carefree nature, she was my favorite of the bunch and it was hard to see her torn apart (both emotionally and literally >.< ).
It was a very hard show to watch start to finish, and for different reasons from start to finish. While I hate to admit it, I did enjoy it, I binged the entire show in one day, and I would even recommend it. While it makes me feel a mixture of hatred and confusion, by the end of the day I'm still thinking about it. I want to discuss the show with others and get their opinions on it. While the show has its fair slew of flaws, and in particular, weak characters I think the uniqueness of it makes it worth the watch, for good or for bad. I even think I'll give the VN a try (My first time playing one). Overall I give the show a 7/10, and when I work up the courage for a rewatch it could even be an 8... or a 6.
