In my journey to explore the vast and glorious expanse of anime this world is blessed with, there are certain things that I seek along the way.
Human, realistic, and relatable characters that develop over time.
Deep, rich, and unique fantasy settings with meaningful world-building.
Innovative, captivating, and fascinating stories with natural pacing.
Powerful themes and unique emotions captured and illustrated gracefully.
Gorgeous animation, stunning soundtrack, and overall enjoyable flow.
Most of all, I seek animes that have a real impact on me, resonate with me, and make their mark on my mind and heart.
1-3 - Awful: Did not enjoy it whatsoever, nothing hooking my attention. The story could be hard to follow or simply nonexistant, the characters could be bland and generic, or it's just straight up cursed with degenerate content. I usually drop these after a few episodes.
4 - Poor: Difficult to sit through without getting bored or uninterested. Might have some minor things it did well like animation/soundtrack, but is lacking in overall quality and cohesiveness. Lots of things that I disliked or got irritated by. Hardly worth watching.
5 - Average: Watchable entertainment. I give this to shows that are watchable, but wouldn't ever rewatch. Had some okay moments, but maybe nothing really special or particularly memorable. Lots of things I didn't like or things it did in a lackluster way, or it simply struggles to keep my interest.
6 - Decent: Somewhat enjoyable. Nice little animes that I enjoy, but I couldn't like it as much as I could, or it struggled to keep my attention at times. While they have some good moments, they may have not had enough of those moments to be rated higher or had some lackluster aspects that tainted the positive ones.
7 - Good: Enjoyable anime. Keeps my attention during the most of the watch, and maybe I'd recommend it to others. Was a nice ride with a fair share of enjoyable moments, but has some aspects that take away from the enjoyment, or it might not be as refined, engaging, or fascinating as it could be.
8 - Great: Highly enjoyable. These are usually well rounded with good soundtrack, good animation, good story, good characters, and leaves you satisfied. An anime that captures real feelings or themes, is memorable, and is one I would recommend to others. Even if there are some weak aspects, they usually don't take that much away from my enjoyment.
9 - Incredible: A truly captivating and unique experience, every aspect being performed in near perfection, and is extremely satisfying to finish. Soundtrack, theme, characters, animation, story; all fantastic and cohesive. Refined to true excellency. Will remember these fondly and highly recommend them to others, as well as often look into the source material.
10 - Masterpiece: What sets apart a 9 and a 10 for me is the impact it has, and how accurately it captures what I seek in anime, in terms of personal taste. True masterpieces execute everything to perfection, and have a strong impact on me, strong enough to maybe even change my perception. They leave their mark on my mind and heart, and I will constantly remember the experience as one of the greatest pieces of art I ever witnessed.
