Both are tragic stories about a dystopian world. Both revolve around a character who goes through a certain development. Tho the development is slightly different, still the situation posed and characters are quite similar. Especially, both the manga give off the same vibe.

The setting to both the anime is very different - Stranger being a Samurai setting. But again, the relation between a kid and an adult is shown in a very similar way here as well. The last sequence of both the movies boast epic action scenes. The kid character is also very similar in both anime.

Both have similar style and design. Not very long chapters. Both are very easy read with lots of action and amazing art. Both are tragic stories told in a very unique way. Both have amazing endings as well that pave way for a sequel without giving off the vibe of being incomplete in any way . And finally, imo, both are masterpieces.

Both the manga have psychological fights. Though the setting is different, both of them are full of fights. And in both the cases it's not the action, but the thought process behind the fights that matters. It's the immense thought put in each blow, intensity of the opponent portrayed through magnificent artwork and the internal conflicts going within the protagonists that is depicted.

I am surprised no one else recommended this. First off, both are samurai anime. Secondly, both have awesome and really similar sword fights. Though Gintama is mainly a comedy, still the more serious parts of the series are very much similar to this movie. Also, both have some very similar characters...
