Yeah they do have all those hidden installs. The worse is Messenger Plus with the new versions I would recommend going with an old one and don't bother upgrading at all. The same for WLM try to go for the 2009 version. Also make sure not to check options that want to install browsers.
Honestly I can't think of any alternatives to access the group chats. I ask at the chat and no one uses IRC. Though you did upgrade your WLM account to Skype, right? (Or force to) If you just want to talk to people one on one, if you already added LMC people as your contacts, then you should be able to chat with them since I know several people like A-tan, Ric and Dan who upgraded but I was able to talk to them on WLM while they were on Skype.
LMC seems ok from the looks of it. It seems they found a way to bypass the force Skype update on WLM, so they are still using WLM until MS pulls the plug on it for good. Yeah I can't wait till the DLC finally releases for the game, but I'm amazed at how different the translation is.
