That's ok. There are way more guys than gals here on MAL. Off the top of my head there's a girl from Ukraine I talk to, a girl from Syria, and a few others. The most well known gal on MAL is the leader of the Metacritic Club.
Maaaan that must've been quite the trip to go in totally blind like that, lucky you. I wish I had that luxury, but unfortunately I had been exposed to a lot of it through videos and people talking about it and stuff. Luckily I got to be there to witness my brothers' minds exploding, but that didn't really happen to me.
Those are great titles you started out with, though--that reminds me, I should do a rewatch of Colorful. It's been a few years, think that was one of those I watched randomly at night in one go so I didn't let it sink in.
I must've been the only person who never went to Hollywood Video lol, which is weird because we would go to Blockbuster every summer to rent movies, though I don't remember if there was an anime section. I have brief memories of Suncoast, but that was about it.
For all their faults, 4KIDS had a pretty diverse selection at times. Sadly, I never appreciated it as a kid, like Ultimate Muscle wasn't something I would watch because it looked so ugly to me (but also I didn't care for wrestling). Now watching it as an adult, it's freakin' hilarious and it sucks it never got a proper home video release (most 4KIDS titles didn't if it wasn't Pokémon). Even 4KIDS managed to make Sonic X tolerable to watch at times, though the whole show itself suffers because of one character. Kids' WB tried their hand at bringing in more anime from other companies, but it seems only Cardcaptors was their big non-4KIDS hit, I think.
There was also Saban with Fox Kids, but their only big anime hit was Digimon lol. I didn't know of any other anime they had that aired on the block until years later like Tekkaman that I gotta get back into watching.
I dunno, maybe if I actually had cable growing up and got to watch Toonami, I'd most likely have a different opinion of 4KIDS now, but I had to make do. Not that I think my mother would've let me watch anything on there back then (though apparently most parents didn't regardless lol), she had to slowly warm up to the idea of anime being a thing that was going to stay as much as she doesn't like it.
ADV deserved better tbh, though maybe they brought their demise upon themselves on top of it. Hard to say, but the sunovabitch was crazy passionate.
Keep hearing from multiple sources ADV were bashed so much by anime fans (about as much as 4KIDS, apparently) when they were around simply because of how they dubbed/subbed their shows. Know of any stories like that as an ADV fan?

What was your first anime through ADV?
