Also yes I also wasn't real hooked till York New arc. The exam arc was always hot and cold for me and didn't pick up for till after. Going into full swing till again the York New arc. But I thought the Chimera Ant arc really went off the rail as it went on. Character that were introduced early on only for them to go no where and get brushed off for new characters that get introduced who completely power creep them in the same arc. I heard it took 7 real life years because of health issue and I believe it. Gon was a completely none driving force in the story, there hole motivation was revenge for a guy the viewer never meet unless the saw the 1999 or read the manga. Which would've been fine, however it just ended up feeling like 2 different plots that over laded apposed to working in tandem with each other. Gon wonted to kill the person who zombified Kite first and the Hunters want to deal with the extermination of the ants and are more or less indifferent to Kits death and what's worse they did this already in the York New arc. Gon was doing his own thing, was in town for his own reasons but was still important to Kurapika character growth and a driving for in the story. In the ant arc all he does is kill one of the guards which was important but the lead up still had that problem I brought up.
Also the king's development had nothing to do with the main cast, he never even meet Gon, it was all related to a character the plot just introduces. That the king consciously kills just so he could play one last game with her, with what little time he had left and the story doesn't really frame how fuck up that the kings' development to find his appreciation for humanity, in the end poisoned a little girl with radiation poison and never told her first. I was like WHAT THE FUCK! THE HELL DID I MISS!
Lastly it really felt like Yoshihiro Togashi hit a brick wall written Goh. You had all these character with weird and interesting powers. All Goh's has through out the hole thing is his rock, paper, scissors gimmick. It was laugh able next to the other nen users. Even when his nen turns him into an adult that's all he's got to work with. Feel free to say I'm a bull shitter cause everyone seems to be head over heels for that arc.
Good taste.
