Shirobako

Workplace drama featuring a really wide cast. Both touch on the darker sides of show business, but rather than wallow in misery the characters move forward, accepting that the business they are in is cruel but that it's what they want to do. Both also depict their characters advancing in their careers and the worries that come with even positive change.

Shows about people willing to sacrifice themselves in order to gain a power that can help others. The cruelty of the setting and its effects on the characters is a huge factor in the storytelling.

Both are stories about princes, and center themselves on a competition over who can prove themselves to be a chosen one of sorts. If you like shows that keep their plot in the dark, and throw in an absurd chuckle every once in a while, these are for you.

These shows offer two perspective on the NEET phenomenon. NHK focuses on the psychology of NEETs, while Eden focuses on society's relationship with NEETs. Both go into how it feels to be young and out on your own in the world really well.

A group of twelve numbered people are caught up in terrorist attacks while a young girl outside the loop tries to do something to help. Great sense of risk and danger in the environment, and it's great seeing the characters succeed those times that they do.

Both are atypical teen love stories told with a really striking visual style. The story works around dramatic reveals about characters' pasts, and the problems they face are very symbolic.

Sad stories featuring an ensemble cast at many points of their lives. Similarly beautiful visuals, and both develop their characters through relationships and pasts rather than real time progression.

Bombastic, exaggerated, ensemble action featuring giant robots. Themes of succession and the topic of sustainable energy abound, and the general character dynamic of a kid having power over a bunch of doubtful adults are shared.

Features a large, campy cast of super-powered characters. The powers range in practicality, but all have their own thematic significance to the overall message. Nuclear power and family play a huge role in the main characters' development.

What people see is what is accepted to be true. Both Lain and Flamenco deal with this view of truth, and confront their protagonists with the question of which reality they want to live in. If you liked seeing alternation between grounded relationships and surreal phenomena, take this rec.

A look into the intersection of superheroes and politics. The media basically can define what good and evil are. The characters in these shows seek truth in the midst of that controversy.

A small number of long, spaced apart, episodes that tell a story of progress and legacy, while showcasing epic battles between people with awesome powers. They're both tragic, yet also optimistic. I've also mistaken Daisaku for Shichika in the past.

Both of these shows quickly familiarize you with their casts, and then show you moments from their lives. Rather than focus on the overall plot, they create an atmosphere using their soundtracks to go with what visuals will be interesting. They're also full of conversations that seem ridiculous but reflect greater truths about humanity.

In the beginning, each episode's plot is self contained, but by the end continuity has been made clearer. Two shows that are great for living in the moment and reveling in the creativity of their makers.

Amazingly crafted sci-fi future settings, conveyed through episodic crime drama. Both shows develop their characters through a series of self-contained sequences, while also having elements of an overarching plot, and ending the series with a focus that plot. If you are looking for a series that can be both episodic and sharply reflective on its characters, these two are the way to go. Should also be mentioned that lauded composer Yoko Kanno made the OST for both.

Gritty police procedural anime from the same studio. They explore the ramifications of their sci-fi settings on the behavior of people, especially criminals.
