Similarities: • They both feature mature and dark themes, one of which being mistreatment, prevalent in both series. • They both feature children in a central position for the story. • In addition to this, they both focus on a war or fights the children are forced to fight by their circumstances. • While said children also have similar circumstances that they are forced to fight by the political structure or ruler they're under for the benefit of said organization. • Both are short series. Differences: • While both series are somewhat science fiction-ish, Now and Then, Here and There is more fantastic as it features time travel and creatures of another planet, while the only thread Gunslinger Girl has is that the girl have their bodies turned semimechanical, which is the premise for the series. • While the rule posed on the children is somewhat morally ambivalent in execution for Gunslinger Girl, the children of Now and Then, Here and There are ruled by a tyrant. • The children of Gunslinger Girl are supervised by a guardian and they are explored as characters through that relationship. Now and Then, Here and There doesn't use that technique and instead focuses mostly on the direction on the story to explore them. • Ironically, the overwhelming majority of children (if not all) in both series are of the opposite gender of the other. • The children come under the control of each organization from drastically different circumstances.

Similarities: • Both anime are stories that mainly focus on the characters and events surrounding their main characters, rather than the main characters themselves. • Both shows put great emphasis on atmosphere. • Both are short series with stories of varying lengths. • Both anime explore a range of different themes through the characters encountered in them. • Both have self conclusive stories that won't majorly (or at all) overlap with the other stories. Differences: • The art style of Kino no Tabi is simplistic while Mononoke's art style is quite experimental and out of the general norm. • The main character of Kino no Tabi's reason for travelling is explored while the main character's reason for hunting mononoke in Mononoke isn't detailed. • While they both put great focus on the world of the series, Kino no Tabi puts more focus into the events and the setting in which they come to unravel than Mononoke, while Mononoke deals with exploring the characters in that setting rather than the place itself. • Kino no Tabi has some more lighthearted stories in its midst, while most of the stories in Mononoke are quite tragic.

Differences: • Kino no Tabi's episodes are conclusive within of themselves, while Now and Then, Here and There episodes don't reach selfconclusive. • While both series use characters to develop their themes, Kino no Tabi uses the change of setting as a tool of presenting new themes, while Now and Then, Here and There does it through its characters only. • Most of the characters in Kino no Tabi are episodic. Most characters in Now and Then, Here and There are not. • Kino no Tabi is mostly done with a theme after one episode, while Now and Then, Here and There continues and develops on them further as the series goes. • Kino no Tabi puts a great deal of focus on its atmosphere, while Now and Then, Here and There puts a great deal of focus on the events happening in the series.
