Report GuruBuckaroo's Profile

Over the years, I've been known by many names, but they can be summed up with Guru Buckaroo Mu (as in 無 in the Buddhist meaning).

Over the years, I've been known by many names, but they can be summed up with Guru Buckaroo Mu (as in 無 in the Buddhist meaning).

I am a relic of another generation - Generation X, lost between the greed and condescension of the Boomers and the nihilism and never-ending toxicity directed toward the Millennials. We aren't the silent generation; we're the invisible one. We were forced to be self-sufficient by the time we started grade school. We tried to keep up the revolution the hippies started, but got lost and forgotten by parents trying to keep the status quo. We fought battles to improve the world, but nobody paid attention because we weren't sensational. We saw what was coming, and mostly decided to do what we could from the shadows.

We grew up on the earliest fringes of Anime culture available to Americans - Speed Racer (better known as Mach GoGoGo), Battle of the Planets (Science Ninja Team Gatchaman), and tokusatsu imports like Ultraman (1966) and Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot (Giant Robo). We traded well-worn VHS copies (uphill both ways) whenever they were available, which was never often enough. Some of us grew up and were able to make sure our kids could have easier access to the content we loved. But mostly, we stay quiet - because we're happy being forgotten. We're used to it, and it keeps us out of the crosshairs.

I don't watch a lot of "current season" shows. I grew up waiting a week between episodes - and that just won't fly anymore. Also helps to keep me from wasting time on a series that goes to shit after 3 episodes. So at the end of a season, or maybe later, I'll go back and binge what I want to see in a weekend (or for really good shows, overnight). Makes my list seem a little odd, and even I'm starting to wonder if I'll live long enough to clear out my backlog.

Rewatching Tenchi Muyo - the original OVA and Universe. I forgot just how much I loved this show. It reignited my love for anime. Pretty much defined the Unwanted Harem genre. My heart, of course, will always belong to Ryoko ♥

Let me tell you something, Kiddies. If somebody ever tries to sell you a hit of acid the size of the ones in Kara no Kyoukai 7, don't buy it. Don't touch it. And don't be friends with them anymore. Seriously. A proper hit of acid isn't the size of a postage stamp. It's about a half a centimeter on a side, contains 200-300 micrograms of LSD, and will affect most people 6-8 hours. Anything else is probably laced with speed, and will probably kill you. At the very least, it'll give you a really bad time.

Wait a second - there was a whole two more seasons of Full Metal Panic! and nobody told me about it? What the hell, guys.

I haven't done LSD in almost 20 years. Yet while watching Dai Mahou Touge, I could swear I had just dropped.

Yosuga no Sora: Now this anime puts the Harem in Harem anime. Then there's the incest. Squick. Well, it /is/ just fiction.

OK, Gainax, I felt royally screwed at the end of the original Evangelion. You gave me FLCL, which made me happy. I'm trusting you this time. I'll give the NGE movies a try, and I'll trust you to fix the problems the series had. Don't you disappoint me, now. I'll be pissed.

Oh I didn't mind at all. It was just unexpected. I'm currently on episode 10 and it's been surprising throughout. I'm enjoying it a lot. The truth is that I much prefer stories that aren't watered down for kids or teens, so this is really up my alley.

This is Soo watching the opening scene of Elfen Lied ~~~~> 8-O

Thanks for the recommendation! :)

My son kept telling me that Gurren Lagann was the Megas XLR of Anime. He wasn't kidding. The Rule of Cool is actually a Law of Physics in this show. Mechs literally powered by awesomesauce.

I remember watching Whisper of the Heart years ago when it came out, and loving it - just rewatched it, had completely forgotten the entire story, just remembered the Baron. Good stuff. Sappy ending, but good stuff - and the usual Ghibli extraordinary scenery.

I am now officially going to have the Tokyo Godfather's version of "Ode to Joy" stuck in my head until the end of time. Argh.
GuruBuckaroo Oct 8, 2010 10:23 PM
What a waste. Sora no Otoshimono: Forte has completely dropped the concept of "plot". Thus, I have completely dropped it.

A little Azumanga Daioh before bedtime really caps off the day nicely. A positive spin on an otherwise lackluster 24 hours.

12 episodes is far too short a season for Highschool of the Dead.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
