Yeah, Father is not a good antagonist.
So, what are you watching now? Any interesting or underrated animes?
1) Why did Sloth emerge at Briggs at the exact time the Elric brothers were there?
2) There are no stakes. I mean they were fighting against a literal God but the only casualties are Fu and that General Armstrong's right-hand man. Olivier Mira Armstrong was literally crushed by Sloth but that did not break all of her ribs. Hawkeye's throat was slit and that results in immediate death but she survived. Scar was cut and stabbed but still survived. Almost everyone who had any injuries ( even Mustang going blind ) did not feel sad because I knew they were going to bring his vision back. Even that Lion Chimera was hurt so much but managed to survive till they could bring Dr. Marcoh and make him use the stone.
Like, there are no stakes. When the Father made the philosophers stone using the country wide circle, I knew they were going to reverse it. So, it had no thrill. I was like "Oh no, anyway" because I knew they will find a way to win.
Automail is not discussed properly. They pull out arms and legs and anything but they don't take 5 mins to explain its restrictions and abilities.
Alchemy is also not discussed properly. How does Mustang shoot flame? Edward Elric uses alchemy against one enemy while just uses the small dagger hand against others. Why doesn't he use alchemy consistently? Edward was literally stabbed with a metal bar but somehow managed to survive for so long and even the bad guys helped him. Like they still are the bad guys and one act of kindness makes them good? Like what the hell... I thought they would backstab him and that would have been more in line with their character. But anyway..
The Father wasn't a good villian, yeah. I like Greed, Pride and Wrath. Wrath was a badass lol and did not want him to die. He was a very good villian. Other than that, Envy was pretty good too. Lust was killed early on so can't say anything about her. Gluttony was just like a child who followed orders. Sloth was introduced very late and didn't do much except saying everything is a drag and that he disliked doing anything.
Scar was my favourite character.
Other than this and the forced comedy, the plot was fantastic. The characters were very good too. I will rethink and change the plot to +1 but these are still my complaints. Maybe the original FMA handled this better.
And tho my comment didn't age well, I did have a point, right?

Though I like Heaven's Feel director (Sudou) because he understands Shirou's character and actually gave him great character moments through expressions even without using the VN's monologues.

"""Complex characters...
First, let's look at the meaning of complex.
Complex character, also known as a Dynamic character or a Round character displays the following characteristics:
1. He or she undergoes an important change as the plot unfolds.
2. The changes he or she experiences occur because of his or her actions or experiences in the story.
3. Changes in the character may be good or bad.
4. The character is highly developed and complex, meaning they have a variety of traits and different sides to their personality.
5. Some of their character traits may create conflict in the character.
6. He or she displays strengths, weaknesses, and a full range of emotions.
7. He or she has significant interactions with other characters.
8. He or she advances the plot or develops a major theme in the text.
A complex character also consists of the following traits:
Moral grey areas. Multiple motivations. Internal conflicts. Lots of life experiences. Vulnerabilities. Dualities. Quirks. Flaws.
A complex character is also a character who develops in time, having more depth to his character.
It's the same as a child growing up. When we're children, we were simple creatures. But as we grow up, as we developed, we became complex and harder to understand.
In fiction, we learn the complexity of the character when we were exposed to them for a long time. We see them developed, we see them become realistic and having more depth as a human being.
Just by this, only Kirei and Kiritsugu can be considered as complex.
Gilgamesh can be counted because he strikes 4/8 characteristics but lacking in the traits area to be considered as complex nor does he have the depth as a character here. He wasn’t really challenged or anything nor his mentality had changed.
Waver... because of Case Files, my vision of him is kind of mixed because he's such a complex character in that novel, but in Zero, he's just a decent character who got his own little development. But really, he’s a one-dimensional character.
Natalia, she's pretty decent too, but cannot be considered complex. Same as Rider, Irisviel, and to some point, Kariya. And all the other characters are far too underdeveloped to be called "complex". Some of them didn't even have the chance to say their motivations and sh*ts.
Even Saber here really just wants to win the grail and that's it. No depth or anything.
Now, moving on to Stay Night.
Artoria here, we had 3 main different versions of her, consisting of different personalities as well as motivation.
In Fate, beginning was the same old Zero unfleshed character, but slowly developed, then we learned her past, her motivations.
When we learned Saber's past, we know how she grew up. But in Zero, there's none of that. So, we never really know the true character of Saber.
In Fate, her motivations were challenged by Shirou. Her motivation, as well as her attitude, changed, affecting the whole plot of Fate. We see her getting a lot more depth to her character, thus making her more complex than she originally was.
In UBW, she’s not that much different, though she is a bit of aggressive a little. But her added depth was when she changed her master, she was still loyal to Shirou, showing her growth as a character as well as a knight.
In HF, she was already fully fleshed out and complex. So how do we give her even more complexity?
Simple. Destroy her character. When she died, her character also died, thus we were introduced to her ideal self, Saber Alter. But comparing Saber Alter to Saber, Saber is far too complex, developed, and have more depth compared to Saber Alter. We see how she compares to her ideal self. Thus, making her character shine even more.
Shirou, nothing to say here except what I already said. He’s the most complex, most developed, main character in all of Type-Moon. But let me elaborate. In the beginning, he’s a hypocrite. His ideals, his motivations, his everything were all fake. That in itself is the perfect introduction on how complex he actually is. Then he only gets developed, gets more depth, and gets challenged in every route that he’s in.
I want to explain more but I don’t have free time.
I’ll just give out the simplified version of the following characters’ complexity.
Rin – She’s basically the main element of the story. She’s essential to every route, that itself makes her pretty complex because of how she manages to change the narrative of the story just because of her choices. Her motivations, her changes, and all other personality was also showed and tackled throughout the story. Her development also helped in learning everything about her, making her have a lot of depth into her character. In other words, while Saber and Shirou are two VERY complex characters as fictional characters, she feels like a real person.
Sakura – out of all the main cast, she’s easily the least developed because of how short her screen time is, but she makes up with her complexity as a character. Her beliefs got challenged by Shirou when he decided to throw away his hollow ideals for Sakura (which again, shows how complex Shirou is, making choices that distanced himself to Kiritsugu). She basically showed emotions, fragility, vulnerableness, as well as her motivations, which elevated her character into such complex character. I won’t mention Hollow Ataraxia as it wouldn’t be a fair comparison when I added the amount of development and depth she got (as well as the main cast and the side cast) in this Visual Novel.
Archer – his motivation is clear. To kill Emiya Shirou. However, his motivation had changed differently depending on the route that he was in. His actions greatly affect the plot of Fate because his existence itself is incredibly complex. He had development and depth to his character through his choices of saving Shirou, the one he wanted to kill the most, in every route. His morals, beliefs, and his motivation got challenged by Shirou. Both of them developed into their own every time they had a conversation. Both of them having their own internal conflict, thus giving more depth to their characters.
All of the things I mentioned are just surface level of their complexity as mentioned in the VN, I wasn’t even going on how their philosophies, character themes, and everything else.
In the side characters, the only people who can be considered as complex are:
Rider, Cu, Gilgamesh, Heracles, Illya, and last but not the least, Kirei.
All of these characters had affected the plot, challenged their flaws, vulnerabilities, and deal with a lot of conflicts, and had depth to their characters because we saw them all in different ways, in different scenarios.
Heck, Kirei peaked in Heaven's Feel, making him the polar opposite of Shirou while still being the most similar to Shirou. Something that Kiritsugu failed to be for Kirei.
In Hollow Ataraxia, all of the side characters get development and had the depth to their characters that made them complex. Souichirou being the best example of this."""
I don't really give 9 or 10 like some charity center(with some exception *ahem* Gosick *ahem* LotGH *ahem*).
Also, read the Fate stay night VN if you haven't already, seeing your scores on Fate 2006 and UBW hurts my eyes. Fate best writer... As much as I like Gen with his Saya no Uta and Madoka, he doesn't hold a candle with Nasu and his Stay Night and Hollow Ataraxia.
Ed and Al are a good duo indeed :D
