Nami is widely considered one of the most influential anime created in the 2000's, if not of all time. It is extremely well known for it's brave attempts to turn the dementia genre on it's head, it's deep character development, and it's unorthodox storyline. Created and written by the critically acclaimed Oyama Kei, Nami has been called a masterpiece by anime fans.
One of the most well known aspects of Nami is it's story; it is simply unorthodox, as it does the process of not feeding all of the story the viewer; it drip-feeds it, giving the viewer only half the story, or sometimes giving scenes without any context. For some anime, this would be a disaster waiting to happen, but in the case of Nami, this is done almost consistently masterfully, holding back information on such subjects such as the fish or the TV.
Nami is a short experimental film of only 3 minutes, packed with beautiful sound design along with the fantastic art and cinematography. With its deep character development and usage of bizarre elements such as the TV or fish, strengthens the main character. It pushes the boundaries of reality to make a statement of truth or illusion. The MC's personality is portrayed with real weight on today's society, and on how we are affected by reality or thoughts. The sound design is very intense with focus on portraying the fear and suffering of reality through psychological abuse.
Overall Nami is truly a masterpiece with rich, vibrant character development, usage of unusual elements, and its highly criticized view on society. It may take a few viewings to truly understand considering all the hidden messages and meaning behind the cinematography.
But seriously though, Nami is great fun and all but obviously a little strange.
