Hi there. Nice Fate/stay night UBW 2014 review. I actually agree to most of what you mentioned there. The OSTs for this one weren't as memorable as in Fate/Zero. The composer for F/Z sure was amazing, she can create so many OSTs that fits and able to be remembered. In Madoka Magica she also did so many thrilling OSTs that fit so well. While the guy who did F/SN UBW OSTs is kinda weak in composing a good music. But hope the 2nd half will have better OSTs since UBW is action driven in the second half compare to any other routes from what I know. Good thing you didn't see the old adaptations from another studio, since they were regarded as garbage and unfaithful adaptations. And you forgot Gilgamesh, so there are two Servants who appeared in F/SN that came from F/Z. Anyway, I decided to comment a bit since by the sound of it from your review, you might not know much about how complex F/SN can become. So I just put some pointers. I haven't played deep into the visual novel (VN) yet, so I wouldn't delve into the VN much. Sorry if you knew about all of what I will mention already, but they might help a bit regarding viewing F/SN anime as well as other Fate related stuff. I'll put them in spoiler to prevent the comment from looking too long.
- The point that has been told the most by those who read the VN is that, watching Fate/Zero as your first anime from the Fate franchise will spoil almost all of the plot twists in F/SN despite that F/Z happened 10 years prior to F/SN. So if you actually don't mind about it, then the order wouldn't matter. But then you have to enjoy F/SN in a different way.
- F/SN has 3 routes in the VN. Fate route is the first route, then Unlimited Blade Works route as the 2nd route, then Heaven's Feel as the 3rd route. Each route shows what happens if Shirou makes a different decision each time a crucial moment comes, some decisions can lead to huge differences in outcomes, which is how there are route divergences. One example would be how Saber would be so defenseless and almost chopped in half by Berserker if Shirou actually did not use his first spell from his Command Seals on his hand, this means Archer is still hostile to Saber and would not be temporarily act as a supporting fire for Saber, which was helpful since she could move to a location where she has combat advantage. So in reality, UBW is not a true sequel, but one out of three "sequels" to F/Z. There isn't really a true sequel, since each route of the VN is one-third of the whole jigsaw. So you won't expect every character to be explored in just one route, unless this anime (for the UBW route) is going to be done differently in the 2nd cour. Archer is such an awesome character here in UBW route, but in other routes, you'll notice that he is just a Servant with his identity not revealed, or maybe just a hint. UBW is his route, so everything is mostly about him, his identity (revealed in 2nd half), and clash of ideals between him and Shirou's. So the focus would be different in Fate route, which is Saber's route, in that one, Archer would merely a supporting character, and Saber would've been explored more. While in UBW, he is the main character. Heaven's Feel route will cover Sakura a lot and how things are really dark and disturbing, as well as Zouken from F/Z who will only appear in that route. So Sakura wouldn't be focused much unless you've read or seen HF route. This route is going to be adapted as a movie soon, hope they'll release it soon this year, or next year. Archer in HF route was described as a "weak sauce" by one of the users on this site. So again, focusing would be different. So regarding all those characters that weren't focused much, they will be focused in other routes in order to complete the jigsaw. Though I'm not sure about side-characters like Taiga. But Masters and Servants would be focused in different ways and their power levels would be different per route, like how Rider died so easily in UBW, but in other two routes, she actually putted up a fight and showed her Nobel Phantasm as well as revealing who she is. F/Z is just one story, which is why they have to let every character to have their moments to shine. Since F/SN has 3 routes, so there are plenty of room for each route to explore just some of the characters in detail, which is why you won't get this balance where every characters are going to shine in one route of F/SN compare in F/Z.
- The slice of life type of scenes meant to be character explorations, mainly on Shirou. F/SN is mainly an exploration of characters, while F/Z is just a documentary of the 4th Grail War. The director for this one is unfortunately a weak director, who was heavily criticised for his weak adaptation of the 6th Kara no Kyoukai movie, which is the most weakest movie compare to other ones, which were done by other directors. So his directing of F/SN UBW has eliminated the important bits, the monologues. The most important one is the picnic scene, which meant to explore Shirou's disturbed mind about how he is disturbed for having fun and lived through the great fire due to 4th Grail War while others are dead, or if any are alive, are traumatised. But no monologue means people who haven't played the VN or done much research will think that this scene is useless. I think the Bluray hasn't many monologues as extra content either, so this is a fail I guess. Other ones like Berserker's power levels compare to Saber was kinda wrong as well. Saber seemed to have a good time beating him while it should be the other way around like in the VN. So hopefully this director will do 2nd half justice.
- There is a reason of Rin being a tsundere. If you remember what she went through after F/Z, even though not obvious, but be taken care of by Kirei isn't an ideal thing, and her father's loss in the war as well as his mother (who died later before F/SN) has hardened her heart. Not to mention what happened to Sakura, which she isn't aware of, but being taken away from Tousaka family is already a sad thing. So this is why Rin at least isn't a generic natural born tsundere. So the scene which she talks to Shirou about the boundary surrounding her house is actually indirectly talking about her personality and how she feels restricted in the environment compare to Shirou.
- The routes form the so called multiverse. And also,Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya (if you ever see this in the future) is also part of this multiverse. As well as all of the Kara no Kyoukai movies (which I recommend you to watch since it was done by the same studio and composer as in Fate/Zero), which sets in either the same world as F/SN or a parallel one.
Sorry for the long comment but hope they kinda helped in understanding some stuff.
