Fuu was more like a catalyst, if anything else. Her disappearance shifts the story into darker tone and provides conflict for Rakka alone. It's true that it was common for the other Haibanes to move on after the departure of one of their own, as it's almost like a custom; all except Rakka, who experience it for the first time. Might I add that it's not just the Haibanes though, even the townspeople who knew Kuu were quick to accept she's gone. Also yeah I agree, I thought they all didn't seem that close enough, even with the first half mostly showing the girls bonding together. I have Natsume Yuujinchou in my PTW list, I'll consider that as a recommendation of yours and I might just message you again. I'd be grateful if we can discuss more too, just leave a comment anytime. I'll think of something I might recommend to you as well, thanks!
It's great that you were able to relate with a character, I think that's where Haibane Renmei excels the most; its character depth (though it applies to Rakka and Reki at best). The other characters did have their share of personal stories, but weren't given much attention (especially Kuu) whereas the 2 main characters. It's alright though, at least they didn't seem like background-fillers to the story without presence, right?
True, it did feel like the overall concept was mirrored in a state of Purgatory. That's an interesting take on the Haibanes! For me, I took it like a trial to them; granted not as much challenging as that of sin-bounds (to acknowledge the sins they're not even aware of), but were still tasked to provide service to the town and find their personal redemption while their time still isn't up. I don't even know why I'm being specific, hehe sorry, but I'm sure you get me. I thought the series was something to reflect upon onself, it's open for interpretation sure, but that also means you're free to interpret its symbolism and messages however you see fit. I liked the series, it's a fresh experience from a medium so heavily condensed into typical anime tropes and identical story-structures. I'll probably pick it up again someday too, I hope you get to learn something new from it when you do rewatch!
