I try to rate objectively without letting how much I enjoy a show get in the way. For example, I love My Hero Academia, but the first season only gets a 7 at best from me for pacing issues and overuse of shounen tropes. This also means you will rarely see a 1 from me, as it is very rare that a show does nothing right. My scores tend to lean towards the higher end, as most of my watched shows are popular in some regard or were recommended by overly enthusiastic people. As such, they must have done a good number of things right.

Another part is in what they're trying to be. I won't take off points from a mecha anime because it lacks a harem, as it is (probably) not trying to be a harem anime. If the premise is cheesy or outright absurd, I won't take points off for the sudden introduction of aliens later on. But, if the premise is about a protagonist with only defensive capabilities and drops that almost immediately, points will be taken off.
