Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho
add

Yuu Yuu Hakusho, now a Shounen Jump's classical, was a very important anime series for establishing Studio Pierrot as an animation studio for long running TV adaptations in the early 90's. With a charismatic cast of rebel and superpowered teenagers fighting their lives on deadly tournament against martial artists and evildoers alike, Yuu Yuu Hakusho was a super hit and milestone into the 'tournament arc' super trope. In the late 90's, Studio Pierrot tried to repeat the same success adaptating Flame of Recca, a manga from the rival Shounen Sunday that, apart its own peculiarities, had the same 'cast of rebel and superpowered teeenagers' and the 'tournament arc' thing all around. Though Flame of Recca were never able to even amass some of the popularity of Yuu Yuu Hakusho, the similarities of both anime vibe and the nice work done by the same studio on its days of glory make both anime worth awhile watching.

Gintama
add

Both anime are set in the same historical period, but with some big differences: while Rurouni Kenshin tries as hard as it can to be a historical accurated portrait of late 19th century Tokyo, Gintama is set in a totally fictional Tokyo where rounins and people dressed in typical Japanese clothes share space with advanced technology and aliens. Also, Kenshin and Gintoki have a very similar past, as both played a leading role in the ultimate Japanese Civil War and became legends; now, they want to leave their past behind and try to live a peaceful life, hiding their scars from the past with a carefree pose. And for the last but not the least, both main characters dropped the katana in favor of non-lethal swords like bokken (Gintoki) and a reverse-edged sword (Kenshin). Gintama is more comedy-driven, while Rurouni Kenshin is more action-paced.

Both stories were created by Masami Kurumada, and share some common features, specially bloody fights, exaggerated manliness and ultimate loyalty. In Fuuma no Kojiro you'll find several characters with almost identical appearance to the ones in Saint Seiya, since Kurumada uses the star system (popularized by Osamu Tezuka) in his works. Kojiro is Seiya counterpart (and vice versa). Ikki (Asuka Musashi) and Shun (Kirikaze) also have their doubles, and so on.
