If something could describe Goblin Slayer, that would be lost potential.
First of all, I 'm not one of those people that were offended by the first episode. I think any art form or product should be alble to portray things that happen in life, even the worst ones. Nevertheless I think its the first episode that is the main reason why this show suffers so much.
The thing with shock value is that when something begins in such an edgy way, it passes two points to the viewer.
a) The writers or the manga artist were free to write whatever they wanted.
b) The show can go anywhere
...
from here.
Sadly from the first minutes of the second episode the show goes downhill really fast. Everything follows a specific formula which made the whole thing hard to watch even during the first few episodes. Basically the whole show can be summarized in the following 5 sentences:
-A quest is introduced
-Goblin slayer and friends go to investigate
-Goblin slayer gets beaten almost to death by some XL thing.
-Goblin slayer survives and spends the next episode on vacations while realising the power of friendship.
-Repeat
The party of main characters that is introduced doesn't help either since they are as bland as it gets which the show doesn't hide since everyone is basically named after their race.
The soundtrack had some good tunes but nothing spectacular. It was good enough for the scenes to play out without inducing ear bleeding but watching the show after finishing Tower of God left something to be desired.
The animation wasn't special either. It wasn't distracting but at some points background characters were drawn really bad and the fight scenes were basically long frames put together.
Overall the show started really strong. Unfortunately anyone who expected a dark fantasy anime in the likes of Berserk found a show that never wanted to be anything more than an average fantasy anime. If Goblin Slayer didn't cause the reactions it did in the first days of it's release, it would fail to stand out from the crowded genre it belongs to. Personally I won't remeber anything about it in a month or two.
