Anime has been a part of my life since I was very young, watching Dragon Ball on Saturday mornings, little realising many of the other ‘cartoons’ I was watching at the time, such as Pokemon, Digimon, etc. were in fact, anime. Fast forward to 2024, and I have discovered a deep appreciation for the genre. For its ability to push boundaries and be as weird and wonderful, dark and gritty as it wants. And on occasion, tear your heart in two.
OK more than one occasion. I cry every time with Clannad Afterstory, and Naruto backstories are always tragic.
My taste in anime for the longest time has mostly been for the grand scale Shonen: Dragon Ball, Naruto, Attack on Titan, etc. but I have been dipping my toes in other genres, finding gems such as Your Lie in April, Yuri on Ice, Erased, and of course, Clannad and its sequel story, After Story. If it has a compelling protagonist, an intriguing setting, and loveable characters, consider me hooked.
Anime is in the unique position of doing something truly special, and though many are intimidated by its quirky humour, that is part of its appeal, and it speaks to timeless values we can all relate to. It speaks of human nature and family, love and loss. So much beauty, and too many anime to watch. So little time…
But I shall endeavour to always explore, to widen my tastes and take a dip into the unknown. After all, who knows what wonderful mysteries I shall stumble upon?
