Jujutsu Kaisen
it feels like the author completely misunderstood what makes shounen fun or interesting. it gets unironically autistic at times, though it makes sense for sorcery - it just doesnt make for an engaging manga.

fights aren't satisfying nor intriguing, feeling like most fights have the same sequences. the ideologies present are vapid at best with certain parts being painfully dragged out and others painfully short.

i struggle to ever find redeeming qualities about this beyond few slightly interesting characters every now and then and barrier dynamics. it introduces and immediately undermines most of the powers. theres a lot of attempts at being meme-worthy that just pull me out. its like characters themselves are aware of what a dull story they are part of. i wouldn't hesitate to call this an insult to shounen.

but still, theres something here for those that enjoy reading essays in their shounen and unironically watch youtube death battles.

Inoue truly shows his mastery as a mangaka with how fast and yet effortlessly he entrances you into this new story. It delivers emotion and weight concisely without wasting any panels. It's effective in it's use of using sport as a catalyst for heavier subjects. Less based on epic sports and more on real struggle, which to me makes it amongst the best by default.

I re-read this every year as if I was revisiting the grave of an old friend who made everything in the world right for me. This is not a boxing story but the greatest character piece of all time that uses boxing to communicate that.

Do yourself a service and see why this is in the hall of legends. The very manga that changed and saved Japan, set the benchmark for the world and changed the lives of all that read it.

Joe is also the most living fictional character I've had the pleasure of knowing. It truly felt like he lived and breathed.

Wasted potential. Should have ended halfway through, dragged on too long. Mismatched pacing that is done very poorly. Things that should be progressed slowly and built up are completely skimmed over with relentless pacing and the rest of it painfully slow, especially in latter chapters. The most important interactions happen too fast and too sudden, leaving you with a bad taste. It had a good premise but didn't execute it well.

My favorite manga to re-read.

Super Star wouldn't lose to anyone. Brilliant story of coming of age and doesn't hammer fist a story into your mouth. It let's you draw your own conclusions, interpret symbolism and witness something surreal yet tangible and very relatable as it is profound. You'll find and realize something new each read. Heavy and dark.

JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 1: Phantom Blood
the equivalent of someone smashing action toys together, soulful and silly with characters behaving less like people and more like caricatures.
scenes don't make sense, perspective is wrong, proportions even more so -- the art is all around horrible yet there's a desire to be dynamic and theatrical that redeems it, setting up the cornerstones for the future parts.

Jumyou wo Kaitotte Moratta. Ichinen ni Tsuki, Ichimanen de.
For a short read of 16 chapters it manages to convey a lot of things nicely. There's lots to possibly nitpick but for it's length and clear message i'd say it's something to overlook. It's very on the nose at times and too convenient. Safe, mundane art.

There is no other Shounen with as much back-to-back nonstop top caliber arcs as Part 1 Naruto and peaks of Shippuden; to the point it's a struggle to name a favorite arc. The Best and most intense pacing of any shounen if not all of manga, which is very easy to forget with how much the anime pads w/ filler, but overall it's the fans that fall off rather than Naruto itself.

Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi
one of the most hype shounen protagonists as hes a regular dude with no cheat powers/berserker shit and prevails through pure endurance + training. the Ki stuff does get a bit silly by the very end but until then it's a pretty smooth ride.

for something nearly 600 chapters long, I felt that it still managed to be well paced and kept me gripped the entire time.

insane quantity of utterly raw panels and pages. fun and charming with great payoffs (everything you wish to see you probably will see) and lovable cast as well as a lot of nice fanservice, at times creating the most ridiculous manga pages and fights ever.

actually gets a laugh out of you, especially with its physical comedy. most side-characters get plenty love to shine.

the only real bummer are the fake at times stakes so it can feel a bit too safe and emotionally manipulative but its shounen slop at the end of the day so isn't that big of a detriment to my enjoyment.

if this ever had gotten fully animated at the right time it could've easily been a bigger series, especially with how it did a lot of iconic moments/staples before the big ones ever did (though it is also heavily referential to older classics, especially Fist of the North Star and Matrix).

for a series I started on a whim because I was in the mood for something martial arts related - this quickly became very beloved.

Soul Eater
The most compact and satisfying shounen to date. It's fun-loving, creative, stylish, quirky and satisfying to the max. It wraps up each character arc, hits every note, gets unexpectedly twisted fucking dark, ties up loose ends and ends at that. Pure soul.

this is the kind of stuff Asano excels at and you feel that since the first page turns. Some of his works flop, but this one isn't afraid to be in your face about what it believes.

Sunny
You can really tell and feel what kind of life experience Matsumoto has met or known - for all his stories share a wondrous sense of nostalgia, realness and beauty in imperfection. His art and stories deliver a unique type of warmth and somberness.

Sweet Home
haphazardly story. ending completely invalidates and destroys everything it setup, making it all pointless. you could say its all a cycle, but thats not something it was ever going for - failing to commit to any message.

The Horizon
very safe of a story with surface level morality like a ten year old kid who just read what nihilism is but without what makes it interesting, repetitive scenes and extremely dull, subpar dialogue. the art is pretty cool the first few chapters, but just like the story and characters - it doesn't reach the reader and only gives them remarks we've read countless times. Nihilism is best told in the mundane, making your entire thing about death and slaughter is probably the easiest and least interesting approach. It's beaten to death.
