First of all, I am a huge Gantz fan, so when I heard there would be a spin off, well let's say I was excited and hopeful. Boy was I disappointed and in a huge way.
The spin off is pretty much an insult to the original Gantz manga. The story is poor, boring and goes nowhere.The characters are dull, and honestly it's hard to know who is who, or care.
The fact it only managed 18 chapters shows how popular it was, i'm suprised it got that many.
Overall the spin off is an even bigger insult to the original Gantz manga, than the anime was.

Got no idea what all the hate is for.
As a side-story to the main series, Gantz:G succeeded in every way to provide a slice of the Gantz pie we all know and love.
I want to address characters as I see that being brought up a lot. I think it is clear that Hiroya Oku has never been a writer of deep characters, but instead, a writer of deep and satisfying character dynamics.

For comparison, lets take a look at Gantz the original. Like it or not, not many of the characters are fleshed out and developed. The only big change we see is from Kurono evolving ... from his nihilistic self after Tae gives him purpose.

Characters like Reika and Kato (As much as we love him) stay the same sentimental, and goal wise. Furthermore, none of the characters bond and develop together. Kato and Kei's relationship is explained in the first few chapters and stays the same for the next 300. Same with Reika + Kei. The rest, characters like Kaze, don't interact meaningfully with the team at all.

This is one of the few points G holds over the original. The entire story is centered around a group of varied, low affinity girls, and we witness as some of them draw closer together or further apart as their emotions and opinions clash. The character writing is much closer to that of Inuyashiki than Gantz, which makes sense since it was published closer to the former.

If you've already read the original Gantz then I don't need to say anymore; you know what to expect. Shocking enemies, gruesome deaths, nice art (Nicer than the original), all accompanied by interesting character interactions and dynamics that the original lacked.

Ultimately, it is a spin-off, not a sequel. In its short 18 chapters it manages to give readers a sweet slice of the Gantz we know and love along with great story elements the author has learned and polished in the span of the original's ending.

Since there's not a single review on the spin-off i thought i should write one
I never wrote a review before but since im a big fan of gantz i thought i should guide the fans of the Gantz
Story is like the same as the main series its a spin-off but we get to see one character from the main series more like his/her existense was proved so i cant say if its an alternate reality.Hopefully it will be revealed.
Art kinda looked like shoujo when i started reading it but now i think its normal though its not that good compared to main series tbh ...
i dont wanna write much since its just started i'll just tell u guys one thing if u liked Gantz u should probably give this spin off a try since its really enjoyable and dont get too attached too the characters cuz u know Gantz.

As of this review, I have recently finished the spin off manga to the somewhat popular titled Gantz.

We are really only introduced to two aliens: first ones kinda basic, similar to a few aliens being fought in the original series. Second one, which is the finale, was quite impressive in my opinion. In terms of gore, there was much more less, but there was enough to satisfy me. If you want to suck in all the lore and details about the world or universe of Gantz, this one will shed some more down. Another thing worth mentioning is this story goes more towards fighting against ... the aliens. There is a relationship but drama seems to lack more than in the original manga, however we do get to see the characters relationships change throughout the story. Sadly, some thing in the manga do seem to go by a little fast due to it's short length at time.

If you read Gantz and enjoyed it, id give this one a quick read.

As a person that has watched and read everything Gantz this was the final piece in the puzzle.

For the people that don't know wha Gantz is I'll bring you up to speed. People die then get spawned in a room with a black sphere that gives them weapons and special suits that help them complete the assigned missions to kill aliens. When they kill aliens they get points, when you get 100 point you get the option to 1. erase your mind and go free 2. Get stronger weapons 3. Revive someone.

Gantz G is compared to the main story featuring Kurono is a nice ... 7. It was enjoyable with really nice fight scenes but the main character is lacking I found myself more fond of the side characters specially Ikegami because of how bad ass she is. Luckily it seems like the author knew this because they don't really focus too much on her in the later chapters. BUT this is a side story so I didn't go in expecting something too crazy with in depth character development and that's what you should do too. If you never read anything Gantz and want to get a taste of the main story this is perfect. If you've already read Gantz and want to read this it's still something fun to check out.

Honestly? I enjoyed it. Now I do have to preface this with saying I eat anything involving Gantz up like it's home cooking. This spin-off definitely had potential to be an actual side story to Gantz if it was longer, but doing a short format story doesn't do the story the proper justice it deserves.

Issues:

First, it's much too short. Yes it's a spin off and wasn't meant for mass serialization, but due to that it doesn't give the characters enough time to REALLY develop like I know Oku is capable of doing. He has some pacing issues in his manga when they're not given ... a long run which is a shame. That's not to say I disliked all the characters in this, if anything I feel like the cast had fantastic potential. The hate respect relationship between Kurona and Ikegami would be really interesting to see developed over time, but it was sadly too rushed. Same with the unsuccessful idol, and the up and coming mangaka. I feel like the only character that was strong out the gate and had a solid arc, besides the two BROS who I would've loved to see more of, was Kaji. But all in all yeah my issues were that this was way too short.


Cool shit:

Aight first and foremost the Mermaid fight was great. Granted it being a 100 point fight again was slightly problematic due to the pacing and could've been much more intense if it was placed later on in a longer story. Regardless I find Okus ability to limitlessly create terrifying and fascinating aliens that defy our conception of life always blows me away; and his ability to make every fight feel like a desperate struggle between weak humans and monstrously powerful aliens. Also the art, as usual in Gantz, is solid as all hell.


Total? I think it's a soft 7, hard 6/10. I still recommend reading it if you love Gantz as much as I do and could eat up anything regarding it.

G is for GIRLZ~!!

In this spinoff, Gantz: G focuses on five girls who died on their school field trip. You don't need to have read Gantz or even be familiar with it to read this short series. In fact, this might be a better entry point before diving into the long series that is Gantz.

It's really interesting to see a Gantz spinoff where Oku is only on writing duties. The artist that he is paired with is good and does a pretty close job at mimicking Oku's artwork, but it really shined a light on Oku as a writer for me. There was less of ... what you'd expect from him such as huffing, gratuitous nudity (though there is still nudity), and a sex drive of a teenager, and a more of a streamlined plot.

With it being only 3 volumes it truly is hard to say how this could have done if it had continued because there is a lot of potential for this series and these characters. That said, Oku really impressed me with the way he included enough character development and ended the series on a safe and satisfactory note considering how long it usually takes for his characters to develop.

I enjoyed this immensely. It had a lot of promise and the characters were all interesting enough that I wished we got to see them grow over 10 or 20 volumes. It's a short read but a pleasant entry into the Gantz universe.
