Many of the main characters from Neon Genesis Evangelion return, such as Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami (as Shinji's love interest), Kaworu Nagisa (displaying some feelings for Shinji), Asuka Langley Soryu, Toji Suzuhara, Misato Katsuragi (as Shinji's teacher, as in Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days), and Kensuke Aida. Yui Ikari is dead, as in the original series, and Gendo Ikari is abroad. Angels will play a role in the plot in human form, they can transfer from human to human.
Nobody has written a review for Neon Genesis Gakuen Datenroku yet???? What the heaaallll......
All right, for the people who has already watched the original N.G.E, I have to tell you, the story isn't that great. Its the type of plots where the protagonist and his friend have to fight the antagonists in their school uniforms. Basically, the ANGELS are invading the earth and there has to be a counteract against it, so teenage students are given the job of exterminating them. They are Asuka, Rei, Shinji, and pretty boy Kaworu. Sounds like the original anime/manga eh? But the thing is, they fight with weapons in their school uniforms instead of huge gigantic robots. The story is enough to keep you entertained. I give it a 7/10 (Good)
I must say, I enjoyed the art. Everyone looks so much sexier, especially Rei (in my opinion). Shinji also looks more handsome. Excuse me, everyone looks a whole lot better. My point being, the art is something to look forward to. 10/10 (Great) For those of you who already read the manga and is reading my review, I give the art a 10 probably because I am comparing it to the original. It really is THAT much better.
FINALLY!!! Let me tell you guys this. In the original N.G.E, Shinji was the biggest crybaby retard I HAVE EVER SEEN. Everytime I saw this guy saying "No No I dont wantz 2 do it bcuz I am too short and am i am a poosy," I wanted to deck this guy in the face. I mean, he has everything right; big gigantic robot with a cool suit. But here, he has a HANDGUN. A MOTHERFCKIN HANDGUN. He looks so good with that, especially with the help of the great art. He is NOT that big of a crybaby in this manga, so you will like Shinji A LOT better. As for everyone else, Rei opens up and starts to actually have feelings for Shinji, Asuka is a tsundere to Shinji, and Kaworu is gay for Shinji and vice versa. 8/10 (Very Good)
Honestly, the scanlators took too long to scanlate this, so it took me about like 4 months to actually finish reading the whole manga. I dont blame them; they have their own lives too. Im just saying that the big gap had an impact on my interest for this manga. But when I originally read it, I was so excited. So I give this a 8/10 (Very Good)
Overall, this manga is probably going to be more enjoyable to those who already watched the original NGE. Youre going to see a lot of familiarities between them, and I found that to be pretty cool. There are also many new characters in this manga, like a cute little girl who likes Shinji and her brother who hates Shinji. That guy is quite the player here. Anyway, this manga would probably take a good 45 minutes to finish (on average).read more
For 22 chaps (which is short of me) the story does well. It seems to end abruptly, but there's enough closure for a spin to a series to like, but you'd have to be familiar with the main story to understand some of what's going on.
What I don't like the most is it's one of those stories that "hints" a "never ending battle" type-thing. Like a "This time may be called upon us again" thing. I'm one of those people highly annoyed by that. I'm putting this here for future reader's sake, in case you're one like me.
One of the best! Everyone's design is very sleek and sexy looking! I like the female school uniforms, Kaworu's uniform and the details on the landscapes.
Asuka has very similar issues as she does in the main series, but Shinji's issues have a surprising twist to them, I say in a good way. You certainly wouldn't except what goes down in this series if you're very attached to the original.
There isn't any sure "closure" with Rei's character, unlike some of the other mains of the series, but it's still a cuteness to it.
What I enjoy most is it's a series that doesn't try to force Shinji into picking between Asuka and Rei. The series more allows for Asuka and Rei to pick HIM.
Don't expect anything to happen different with Kaworu in this. Just like other series, because he's an angel he'll get close to Shinji, but then "disappears".
I enjoy seeing a more confident Shinji running around with a gun! He's not all "*sob* OH LAWD WHY?! *sob*" all the time.
I've seen a good share of EVA spin offs now, and it's better -- It's just better. The fact that is has more focus than Shinji, Asuka, Rei, (and sometimes Kaworu, even tho we know it won't happen) love conflict going on makes it better.
If you're interested in seeing the NGE characters in a fantasy action with not as much psychological impact, and drawn all sexy you'll enjoy this!
If all you enjoy is the comedy factor of Shinji, Asuka, Rei, Kaworu love conflict you'll hate it, because in this it doesn't exist.read more
Holy shit you would not expect a spin-off like this to be that good. In this alternate universe, Shinji goes to a catholic school (or something like that) and he and the other "pilots" (they're just chosen kids now) have to fight angels while putting up with their high school life. It's hard not to say much without spoiling anything but the romance is much more upfront this time (which is kind of a good thing; Shinji explicitly has feelings for Rei) and the fights between angels boil down to SHINJI USING A FREAKING JESUS HANDGUN. It's somewhat short at 22 chapters, but there's a lot of closure so you're not left hanging. All in all, a VERY good spin-off.read more
