Recommendations

This is a recommendation for the whole franchises, not just the first title in the series. Both are adaptations of visual novels by the same authors that centers around mystery with the same format of repeated alternative stories of the same event, each arc revealing different details that can help with solving the mystery and uncovering the truth when put together.

Similar gothic aesthetics, more mysteries and unanswered questions than you can count, twists and revelations whereever you look and both take their time to properly build up every major event and especially their conclusion. Fighting is also a big part of both, albeit it more focused on intellectual battles in Umi, rather than mostly physical like in Pandora Hearts.

The protagonists of both works find themselves facing off against a supernatural opponent, ones that seem to have endless power that don't reveal themselves to the characters.

Protagonist goes through time loops and has to figure out how to fix it. If they don't figure it out they'll experience deaths of their close ones over and over again, taking a toll on their state of mind.

They are rich -> they are stuck in their houses -> they are killed -> ... -> they struggle to dislodge themselves from this vicious cycle.

The overall plot of "Please solve the case. Figure out which one of these characters is not-so-innocent, and quick, before everyone in this building dies horribly." Although it's worth noting that Umineko also has the "fantasy/these murders were committed by means of magic" perspective, and Doubt is a more run-of-the-mill case.

Trapped on an island, the protagonist has to take on the role of a detective and solve murders that start occuring.

Two of the most mindblowing mysteries I've read, where every detail feels intricately planned from the beginning. When you go through them a second time, it feels almost like a completely different story than your first read. They both deal with heavy topics and thought-provoking themes, though their stories are very different. AoT puts a lot more focus on action whereas Umineko is more of a detective novel.

While Fullmetal Alchemist and Umineko have different narrative focuses (FMA being more like an action-adventure story; and Umineko being a murder mystery story, at least in Episode 1 anyway), they still have pretty similar aspects. Often sharing similar symbolism, concepts, characters, and even the themes portrayed. Both are also considerably darker and more complex than most shonen manga out there (With most episodes of Umineko being published by Square Enix's Gangan Comics, who also published FMA). And also, both are overall really good stories that everyone should check out!

Umineko is a mystery story about the protagonist who needs to find the culprit of a series of murders on an island. It's not even certain that there's actually an assassin or if it's just the magical doing of a witch. Every time the protagonist fails to find this alleged culprit, the event of the murders keeps repeating over and over. Jojolion has many different mysteries at its core, and it's a story about the protagonist discovering his identity and finding a place/family to belong. On that note, both protagonists don't remember who they are, and we accompany them in their journey of self-discovery and the  read more

Murder. Death. Killer versus detective. Tons of money. These stories have it all - from bloody investigations to little girls. Dangan Ronpa's premise is quite down-to-earth, while Umineko involves supernatural themes. And yet, both involve equally ridiculously impossible crimes.

Protagonist gets stuck in a situation where he has to witness his close ones get harmed and die and has to figure out a way how to stop it. Both protagonists are highly intelligent.

In a battle between a man and supernatural, the protagonist tries to figure out how the "magic" works in a detective-like way to save his family.

Repeating time in order to keep everyone alive and achieve a "Golden Ending" - these are themes of these two mangas.

As group of people are stuck in one location, murders start to happen and the cast has to figure out which one of them is a culprit before more of them become a victim.

* The art style (especially facial expression & body proportions) are quite similar * There's the 'wealthy family in a mansion' theme * Both contain lots of gore/uncensored death scenes

Trapped on an island and unable to get out, murders start to happen and the cast has to try to get together to find out the culprit before more of them get killed.

Protagonist is trapped in a despair-inducing time loop and has to figure out how fix stuff to get free. Both manga franchises are separated in multiple parts by arcs which are different time loops at different time.
