i hold this manga incredibly close to my heart, i fell in love with it almost the moment i started reading and my love for it only grew more with the more i read. I'm not really into sports anime, they really lack something in them but when I started reading Hakyuu!! I got hook immediately.

The story is just GREAT and it really teach you some values that you can apply in your day by day, when I finished reading I couldn't help to cry... all the characters are amazing and seeing them grow is just wholesome (I hope we get a one-shot or a movie, I need more Hakyuu!!)

When Hinata jumps really high i get really excited.

STORY
The thing i like most about this manga is how it manages to express it's themes and characterisation through the games themselves. It makes ever encounter unpredictable and not only raises the stakes but also left me problem solving along with Karasuno. There are a few pacing issues in a few of the arcs with a few narratives needing a bit more time to develop but overall the progression of the characters in terms of their arcs and skills are very natural and easy to follow. It's so hype whenever you see the work put in actually ... pay off even if it's in a small way. Normally training arcs in stories aren't too interesting because of their means to an end style approach but in this manga the process of learning is something heavily embedded into the narrative and the characters. This is a story all about active growth. This series doesn't necessarily encourage going beyond your limits as much as it encourages putting the work to learn and understand everyday so your limits get higher and higher. These mini victories are at the heart of the narrative and play off of my personal favourite aspect of this series. The way Haikyuu!! handles the idea of failure. It's crushing and emotional. The characters cry and feel real turmoil. Some even go as far as to question their passions or why they even try. It's real and it's woven into the themes of growth so well that you really understand just what it means for all of them to have their passion.

ART
The art of Haikyuu is beautiful in all of it's stylised glory. At the beginning there's a lot more focus in details and shading but then soon towards the end all the lines, expressions and postures go in service of the energy. This is one of the most energetically drawn manga i've ever read. Most of why it is like this is because of the panelling. The way the eye is directed throughout the actions of the games makes every movement feel fluid and explosive. In this manga you will find examples of some of the best and most creative uses of panelling in manga. This series is fun to read specifically because of how everything works in service of energy.

CHARACTER
Everyone in this show is so likeable in their own way and breathe so much life into this manga. They're all very well developed especially towards the end and it's nice watching them progress through the series. What makes them standout is how they each convey different positive philosophies for life through their actions or attitude. For example a few of the characters show varying themes of self maintenance. Making sure that everyday you are keeping your self healthy in both mind and body. Prioritising discipline through habits to achieve the best success in the future. I feel like having characters go more into depth on what having strong will means to them makes their resolve hold more weight.

ENJOYMENT
I like the feeling of inspiration i get coming out of reading a good series. It's normally artistic but with Haikyuu is both that and for a new outlook on personal growth and investment in passion. Haikyuu is very fun and to me has one of the best ending arcs of any long running story iv'e read or watched.

This manga helped me through my childhood trauma.

Somehow, Haruichi Furudate managed to make me love volleyball. However, Haikyuu is not just about volleyball. It's about the characters, their development, how they improve as both volleyball players and people. It's also about the connections between these characters, their relationships and the beautiful way in which the author writes their deepest struggles in a way that a regular person can relate to. Story: 3/4. Some matches were less interesting than others and perhaps took more pages than needed, but the plot as a whole was still fun to experience. Effort to continuity was apparent with nice, fulfilling callbacks. The moments created, however, was far and away the manga’s strong suit in this department.

Characters: 2/2. While the manga was adequate in this respect at baseline, obvious efforts were made to flesh out backstories (excessive at times!) and establish individual quirks. Fantastic character development as its saving grace.

Haikyuu is probably the most popular sports manga as of now, and honestly, one of the few I read. Really, it's the only sports manga I've read. As such, I have little frame of reference for this series. Regardless, here are my current thoughts.

The best way to describe Haikyuu would probably be as Dragon Ball Z with Volleyball. That may seem like an odd comparison, but I'll explain myself. Dragon Ball Z is a manga with arcs. Each arc is pretty much exclusively about fighting, and all the arcs are pretty self-contained. There's not much plot, just fights that usually involve Goku, some side ... characters, and the villain who doesn't appear again. If you were to replace 'fighting' with 'volleyball', and 'Goku' with 'Hinata and Kageyama', you basically have Haikyuu, with a few discrepancies.

Now, I know I'm not making a grand revelation by saying Dragon Ball inspired a shounen manga, but my point here is that nowadays Shounen usually try to mix things up. They may throw in adventure, have an overarching plot, just a change in location, whatever. In what is probably Haikyuu's (and Dragon Ball Z's) biggest flaw, most arcs are pretty much the same besides the characters. Almost all of them are training arcs or indoor high school male volley ball matches. For the record, I don't think making the series entirely about volleyball is inherently bad. Baki is nonstop martial arts action, and a huge part of its engagement is that every ounce of the term 'martial arts' is squeezed out to make that series fun. Like I said though, Haikyuu only has two kinds of arcs, sans one or two exceptions near the end of the series. And those two exceptions were really interesting. Exploring Beach Volleyball was a great mixup that also stayed true to the series. Seeing our protagonists on teams with previous rivals was also interesting. I simply wish the series pushed this more.

The characters are also obsessed with volleyball. Pretty much every character arc (Of which there are very few) are about volleyball. There are some characters that are like "Oh, I don't care about volleyball that much. It's just a thing I do.", but all we ever see them do is play volleyball, so it doesn't feel like that. The only character moments I can think of that weren't about volleyball is when there was something preventing the characters from playing volleyball. And like I said, not automatically bad, but that means that a lot of effort needs to be put in to make characters both believable and distinct.

That effort wasn't put in.

Aside from something like "I wanna be good at Volleyball" -> *Becomes better at volleyball*, there's not much. Tsukishima is the only one who has a real character arc throughout the whole series, and he's probably my favorite character. Kageyama was alright too. The others? Maybe something at the beginning and end, but not much. I wouldn't mind this for all of them, since the simple progression in skill is fairly well done, but I really would've liked more character moments for at least a few of the main cast members. There's also the rival teams, which can be good or bad.

You may be thinking that I'm being really critical of a series I gave a positive score, and that's true, but at the end of the day, most of the Volleyball matches are pretty engaging. It's established early that not only is Team Karasuno an underdog team, but they're also more than capable of losing. Aside from some earlier matches, all of them are pretty tense, especially during nationals. I think I'm in the minority in thinking the Shiratorazawa match wasn't the best, and that's mostly because I found the opposing team boring. After this though, all the matches are great. We get some character establishment for each team before the matches, and the promise of matches with Nekoma and Fukurodani felt really climactic.

The art is an interesting topic. earlier on especially, it felt that facial features were... plastered on? It seemed that the author neglected to draw a foundation, which made looked kinda bad. As the series goes on though, the art becomes pretty great. It has style and detail, and the character designs are all distinct. The paneling's great too. You wouldn't notice it unless you were looking for it, but that usually means it's doing its job.

Overall, a fun time. I'm interested to see how I'll feel about this series after reading hajime no Ippo, Slam Dunk, and Eyeshield 21. I've watched the anime as well. Seems like a solid adaptation.

Real quick nitpick, am I the only one that found it weird that only the characters we know showed up to the final match to cheer on our protagonists? Like, Hinata and Kageyama made other friends in the Volleyball club after the others graduated, right? Their own parents didn't show up? Kinda demonstrates my point of how little the characters are developed.

Volleyball had never been a sport that I'd paid any mind to before. I had no idea that it could even be played indoors until I was in high school and my school had an indoor volleyball club. Haikyuu!! changed that completely for me, however, and now I'm actually interested in volleyball as a sport.

This is a story about how sports are a good metaphor for life and how they can be good catalysts for teaching endurance, resilience, respect and comradery. This is a story about the old cliché of following your dreams and not letting them go, but done in a way that is actually realistic by a competent writer. I think I could give infinite reasons about why giving Haikyuu!! a shot is worth it, but these are the main ones:

1) The mangaka (Furudate) did his homework here when it comes to researching about volleyball and the technical aspects of the game. Anyone who watches volleyball regularly ... or played it for a while will become fazed at how realistic the portrayal of the sport is in this manga. The matches feel real; they don't feel like "make-believe", far-fetched stuff. Even if they are fictional, they are describing situations you could actually see if you followed tournaments on TV.

2) The characterization is great. No character is generic and they're all individualized enough, with unique quirks and features. They all have obvious strenghts (both as players and people) and obvious weaknesses. Hinata, the protagonist, receives most of the attention, but all of the important characters are developed in some way or the other. Also, being the protagonist isn't seen as armor to justify giving Hinata too much of a special treatment or power; he has a lot of potential as a player as well as a positive, upbeat attitude, but he is eventually forced to face opponents who have much more natural talent than he does.

3) The writer didn't separate the technical aspect of the sport from the psychological one. We have many teams of teenagers with their own struggles and demons. Sometimes these struggles affect how they perform as players and the writer doesn't shy away from exploring this.

4) The pace of the story feels exciting and smooth. Haikyuu!! is perfect for binge reading because the chapters leave you so curious about what is going to happen next (especially the chapters focusing on serious matches); basically, the story never feels boring, but it doesn't feel rushed, either.

5) Even if you don't like volleyball or if you aren't a sport-sy type of person, the characters, situations and struggles you encounter here will be so relatable that you will probably be able to get a valuable lesson you could carry for your entire life. The writer is brilliant in how he deals with life difficulties without getting too dark or isolating his target demographic (shonen). Haikyuu!! is a perfect balance between the lightheartedness of school boys socializing and the serious themes that devoting your life to sports can bring.

All in all, Haikyuu!! deserves the status of a masterpiece. One of the most solid shonen mangas from the '10s. If you dislike it, I'd actually argue fiction focused on sports isn't for you.

Haikyuu is a fun, light-hearted manga that manages to teach you important life lessons while being very dynamic and action-packed. Honestly, It has everything you could ask for!

Story - 10
The story follows the Karasuno high school volleyball team through a series of training matches and tournaments. It never feels stagnant and character growth is constant. In every match, we find something new about the players and about the sport itself. You can never predict what's going to happen and even the most inconsequential of matches will have you on the edge of your seat.

Haikyuu as a manga sits in a very strange place of having strong messages and ideas that one can resonate with and being a corny nick jr manga that offers nothing in most story elements.

Let it never be known that I am disrespecting Haikyuu. I think most matches are incredibly tense and have a lot of feel good moments from our developing cast. Some matches during the latter end of the manga have moments that genuinely left me speechless. Haikyuu also has some of the best presentation and composition I have ever seen in manga. It is up there with Berserk, Vagabond, and Bleach. ... Hinata, as a main character, is extremely enjoyable and evokes a good feeling with the audience like "yeah thats our guy, dont look down on him!" I especially like how the author sets things up quietly. The author will foreshadow something in the same volume with just a small glance or action; that is super cool and plays into the presentation praise I gave earlier.

Despite all this, in my opinion, Haikyuu is horrendously bad at character writing. Unless you dive into the very shallow framework of the series and extrapolate the most benign ideas, this series has almost 0 QUALITY characters. I would not want to use massive names for comparisons but look at any other shonen, hxh, csm, even jjk have a cast of captivating characters. Kurapika's needs and desires or Gojo's intention and obstacle. The cast of Haikyuu, if you can stomach engaging with them for so long, fundamentally lack the charisma and modern writing behind them to actually bode well with. I am not a volleyball person like 99% of Haikyuu's readers. I have not played the sport outside of a P.E. class. I can verify if any technique or any rule said in Haikyuu is legit but I do know that any piece of media is suppose to respond to their target audience. I am not going to make a political mystery thriller with high tech machinery and weapons framed on a national sport for children (unless its cars 2).

Despite being depicted for younger male audiences, Haikyuu's character interactions and overall dialogue is GARBAGE. The author panders so far to literal children that when a character says "ass" there is a full page dedicated to character reacting as if the person just said a slur. So many character say the same thing that get so old so fast it is insane. If you took a shot every time the word monster was said during the 300s, you would not wake up tomorrow. I get hyping up characters and obstacles respectively, but Haikyu throws in the word "scary" or "frightening" or "horrifying" at every single turn.

I still rate Haikyuu a 7 because despite it's flaws I think it is a really well done manga for what it excels at. I was more critical in this review but that is a given; while the depth of flaws to praise favors the latter, the width prefers the former.
