Q: What happens when an unstoppable Mary Sue meets an immovable Mary Sue?
A: Death Note.

The protagonist, and his adversary, are both genius pretty boys (with the odd names of Light and L) who have an incredible amount of achievements and skill for their young age. Light somehow predicts things that he could not possibly have the foresight to predict, because, you know, probability is a thing. Don’t worry though, it’s not like you know that he’ll always win, because L possesses this exact same unexplained and ludicrous ability to predict the future; he just does so without a cheesy “Just as planned!” catchphrase ...

Death Note has plot holes, but that is not the problem. I can forgive the plot holes. My problem with Death Note is the characters. The main characters Light, L, and N are not likeable at all. Light is not an anti-hero, he is quite evil. Somehow, the good guys L and N are very dislikeable as well, they are probably some of the most annoying characters I have encountered in Manga. In the end, I was rooting for no one. I wish the author made Light into an anti-hero, making him only kill bad people. Then it would be so much more interesting.

This manga is for edgelords. While it has a strong beginning that I actually like, everything after that is pretty predictable, so I feel like I'm reading some high schooler's essay that starts with a good hook and the rest is bullshit. I feel embarrassed recommending it to people because it's so misanthropic. It's better than watching tv but that's not a high bar to get over IMO.

The main character being so weak and cornered almost every time he talks to the police makes him look pathetic. That one scene where the hero says he was "never so embarrassed in his life" after the school ...
