10/10. I liked it, here's why:
This manga starts with our hero realising two things: 1) he is alone in his life and 2) he will die. This is a crossroads for him . Dumbstruck by the fear of being alone and by the fear of death, his only option is to face life and, at the very least, get a friend by the end of the year.
Wanitokagegisu is primarly an existential work. And by that I mean this: in Wanitokagegisu the essence and purpose of humans is not something known and eternal -unlike the popular belief before the industrial revolution-; on the contrary, humans exist

tl;dr: A manga about a man going through an existential crisis that’s relatable, but ultimately doesn’t seem to convey anything.
Tomioka Yuji is a 32 year old security guard that has been working the night shift for seven years. It’s a very lonely job but even before that he’s always been alone, not really having friends or anything of the sort. The thing is that he never really paid much attention to things, just going with the flow, so when he realizes the state of his life he is utterly shocked and decided that he wants to change and no longer be lonely. As such, this ... Apr 7, 2020
Finally finished Wanitokagegisu. Weird, I started reading it years ago. Picked it back up in my 30s, and am living a life eerily similar to the protagonists (night shift worker, works alone, apathetic and lonesome)...
That alone made me give it a 9. If we're being honest, the manga a few issues, mainly dealing with the plot. Story had quite a few far-fetched scenarios (kinda like Ciguatera). It featured a lot of winding, branching storylines, and introductions of side characters that would suddenly disappear without any reason (I guess like real life?). The most unbelievable part is that a young, beautiful girl would shack up with a total ... Oct 7, 2023
Wanitokagegisu is existential and weird. 8.5/10
Our main character, Tomioka Yuuji, has lived isolated for the past seven years. For those seven years, he worked as a night guard by himself, wasting time away in the repetitive uneventful nights. However, due to a personal realization in the first chapter, Tomioka awakens from his perpetual loneliness, which he has become accustomed to. He makes a wish to a shooting star: for a single friend. His alone life is constantly disrupted by unforeseen events, some of which are joyous, and others incredibly gruesome and morbid. Whatever life throws at him, he picks himself up, reflects upon his own ... Feb 19, 2021
In order to appear heroic main character doesn't have to face an adversary which is their polar opposite, sometimes all they have to do is face the nemesis we all know too well; life itself.
The pace fluctuates frequently between dreary, action-packed, emotional, very subtle horror; with all of it encapsulated in cynical humor. Minoru understands that life is capricious, and this is reflected in his narrative structure. It is simply wild - borderline directionless, with side characters and motifs that show up with apparently no intent. Not every lesson exists to be learned. The general style is detailed and polished, while comical moments are ... |
