Story 6/10
To be honest, when I started this manga I thought I was going to rate it lower, then at some point higher, but then it is a 6 for me. It is a nice slice of life, wholesome manga, that manages to keep you engaged despite some cliché and make-you-roll-your-eyes-moments. However, there are some things that seem to happen just to stretch the manga and at that point dont even add any value to the story at all. For example: Satsuki had NO bussiness encouraging Amano once again to confess to Momoka when Satsuki is 1.supposed to be Momoka’s friend (meaning,
...
supposed to not want to create problems for Momoka) and 2.Momoka was in a happy, healthy and stable relationship. Granted, Satsuki probably didnt know Amano had confessed a long time ago, but still, this plot was so unnecessary for the reader. Same goes for Amano still having feelings for his “best friend’s” girl and confessing to her again in the grandiose gesture while fully aware of my point 2 above. I also felt like things were thrown in there and not given proper closure, for example, did Narumi ever learn Hikori was in love with him?? She also seemed to have gotten zero consequences for allowing the rumor of Narumi being her boyfriend to spread.
Other than those two major flaws, Namida Usagi is a nice read and has a very nice pace and flow. I liked how close the group of friends was and how easily conflicts were resolved, instead of being dragged on. I have to praise Narumi and Momoka for being able to have such a steady relatinship from such a young age, with their family member engaging and being present and encouraging for them. Not always you see such healthy and honest relationships develop.
PS- did you notice all guys in the manga were in love with Momoka at some point?
Art 7/10
I enjoyed the pastel color pannels used in this manga. It is only me or Momoka reminds you of Sakura card captor too??
Characters 7/10
My top 3 favorite are Kairi, Akutsu and Yunagi (of course!). Why? Kairi was the embodiment of what a bestfriend should be: empathetic, loyal, always supportive while also respectfully pushing you out of your comfort zone. Akutsu to me was the boldest, funniest and silliest of all, but deep down you could tell he is a kind hearted person. Yunagi? She was just too cute and smart and fresh for her age.
Now, things worthy of mention from other characters:
-Momoka: she is just too kind and good natured to be real. I disliked how often she cried but most of all, how easily she felt insecure and distrusted Narumi when the guy time and time again found her in the most suspicious of situations and not once did he not trust or defend her and asked her version of the story.
-Narumi: he is literary THE boyfriend all girls, especially unexperienced girls, should have: mature, thoughtful, passionate, kind and definitely has a lot of patience because at times I felt like kicking Amano’s or even Momoka’s butt for how they treated him.
-Amano: I felt he was there just for a plot, never really added much than supporting Momoka with Narumi while deep down wanting her for himself or being Narumi’s “rival”. But as far as rivals go, I liked Kuon 10 times better than Amano.
-Satsuki: I liked she was used to represent a group of people, those who at times feel left out in a group or with other interests, however, she lost so many points with me after encouraging Amano to confess to Momoka, who did she think she was helping?
Enjoyment 6/10
I feel bad because I did enjoy reading this manga a lot more than what this grading might lead you to believe. However, grading it any higher doesnt feel right because the story isnt that good or life changing or even original.
