At the invitation of an old school friend, introverted high-school student Mikado Ryuugamine, yearning for a life less ordinary, makes his way to Tokyo. His destination: Ikebukuro, a hotbed of madmen living most unusual lives. On his first day there, Mikado encounters a cast of characters so colorful, the rich hues of his rural hometown pale in comparison! And as if the naive stalker chick, the high school senior obsessed with the rather creepy object of his affections, the hikikomori genius doctor, the hedonistic information dealer, the strongest man in all of Ikebukuro weren't enough…Mikado also chances upon a sight that leaves him rubbing his eyes and scratching his head—the Black Biker, who is black as night from bodysuit to license plate, soundlessly weaving through the streets like a figure out of an urban legend. Who is this "Headless Rider" on the jet-black metal steed!? And why does it seem like Mikado's already gotten himself neck-deep in the insanity that is the norm in his new home!?
Durarara!! was published in English by Yen Press from January 4 to October 30, 2012; in Italian by Star Comics from January 14 to July 14, 2012; in Polish by Waneko from February 6 to August 6, 2015; and in German by Egmont Manga from October 5, 2017 to April 4, 2018.
I'm not going to go into too much detail as the anime is one of my alltime-favorites and way more recommendable to spend time on than this manga. Really, whatever you think of Durarara!! after reading this (or planning to), watch the anime! You definitely won't regret it.
What's upsetting me the most is that the artstyle is just, whack. I think I'd only read it more than once because I basically love the characters a lot, but overall it isn't an enjoyable sight. The story portrayed in these 4 volumes is also rather... weak, to stay humble. It's almost as if you're already supposed to
know the anime prior to reading this because everything happens so fast.
In the end it's an okay appetizer for people who don't know the anime yet (which again, is really good, I can only recommend you to check it out!!) or hardcore fans who still got some space left on their manga shelf to fill. The cover art doesn't look that bad imo, at least from the back haha.
haaa.... since there were only negative reviews, I'll try to show you all the positive part of this manga.
I admit, it really IS a little confusing.
The first chapters suddenly throw you into the story, while the whole plot, involving (almost) every charcter, is partially shown to you.
The art too, isn't what i would call outstanding, it looks better in the Anime...
If you read all the currently available chapters and you stlii haven't understood it yet, i recommend to watch the anime.
That's what i have done (from the beginning) and i must say that the story has a lot of twists and is a little
complex, but very enjoyable.
Don't worry, the big lump of storyline that has been thrown at you in the first chapters will be cleared and explained soon.
The setting of the story is in Tokio, and the story really gives off an urban vibe.
In the End I really recommend this manga to people who like (more or less) innocent and gentle main characters that have to deal with not very suitable things...
I'd compare the situation of "Mikado" to the main characters of Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, Deadmen Wonderland...
Please try it out!
It's really amazing~
(I#v been searching for other Manga like this...)
