Synopsis

In a world of magic, the powers and future of a mage are predetermined at birth through so-called "Marks"—four symbols that categorize a human's aptitude for magic. Lamenting the fact that his mark was considered ill-suited for combat and only useful for magic augmentation, an incredibly skilled sage decided to reincarnate thousands years in the future.

Reborn as Mathias Hildesheimr—a six-year-old boy and the third son of a duke's family—he attains the mark of close combat he always desired. Unfortunately, it is also discovered that mankind's knowledge of magic and swordsmanship has drastically deteriorated in this era; only shoddy magic equipment can be sporadically found, while even the most basic spells have been forgotten. To add insult to injury, his current mark, once hailed as the most powerful, is now viewed as the worst.

When Mathias becomes 12 years old, his unrivaled swordsmanship lands him in the Second Royal Academy. Shattering prejudices, he promptly makes ripples in the academy and beyond. However, the former sage uncovers signs of dark forces working in the shadows, and with humanity weaker than ever, it is up to Mathias to thwart their evil plans.

I'll be real, If you have every read anime about magic and mystical other worlds then you will find NOTHING of novelty here. The same tropes and cliches from an overpowered protagonist with the need to explain absolutely everything coupled with his own harem and bad guys who stroke his ego at every turn. It is not mediocre. It even managed to get a smile and a "hey that looks kind of cool" from me. Visually it is passable but honestly unless you are new to anime or just want some junk food you won't really be getting much out of this read more

I've read a lot of manga of this type at this point, and it might skew my objectiveness a bit, but this manga just doesn't perform for me well.

The main deterring factor for me is the characters. They are soulless as if it's they were all one person. The way they think, talk, and act, it's all the same and very predictable.

Nonetheless, I must give some credit for the art quality. It's very clean and eye-pleasing. Especially how the demons and side characters look. However, that is what also makes me sympathize (?) with the demons because they, to be honest, do not read more

Shikkakumon is pretty interesting. I don't normally start off my reviews that bland and boring, but it kind of fits in with what I'll say.
BUT first I'd like to say I have a pretty good nose for what's going to be adapted into anime, and I'd put my money within the next few years, this will see an adaptation.

As with everything I review, I read it once, up to date, then I go back and read it for review purposes. To see if I was jaded by anything, or if there was something I missed, and so on, because I believe a great manga read more

This is your typical overpowered protagonist in a swords and magic setting, which has already been done about a million times. The story is generic and nothing to write about and there are even some moments where it makes you question the logic of the characters. However, what makes this particular manga stand out from others is the above-average art and pretty cool fight scenes (in my opinion). Instead of just a straight-up brawl with the enemies, the main protagonist actually uses his head in the fights and it makes for some interesting battles. The dragon loli is also pretty cute.
