Prelim: I watched Your name on blu ray after it was released in 2017, and recently rewatched it for the purpose of this review.
STORY- 8/10
Your name's story follows two main characters and a plethora of supporting characters. The two mains, Taki and Mitsuha, swap bodies and live each other's lives across a time gap that may be slightly more sinister than first insinuated. The story a good number of the points a perfect story should hit. It is consistently impactful, there are real and genuine stakes, it is moving and powerful throughout the entire film, however, it is somewhat predictable, which does not significantly detract
...
from the experience but is something to consider. One of my few complaints about the story is that it ends, as in it ends without a full conclusion. It is a GOOD ending, but it is somewhat lacking in closure.
ART-11/10
Ah, the art. The animation. Let me phrase this correctly so none of the tone is understated. This is, the best-looking animation I have ever seen. The single most beautiful piece of animation my eyes have ever laid their gaze on. This looks better than Picasso, better than da Vinci, and better than Michelangelo. In my personal opinion, this movie will never be beaten animation-wise. It looks too ridiculously good.
SOUND-10/10
Some of the score that RADWIMPS composed for this film continues to be incredibly good after constant re-listens. Dream lantern, Zenzenzense, Sparkle, and Nandemonaiya are still some of my favorite score songs up until this day. The actual sound design for the movie is also incredible, and Yamada Haru continues to show his pure expertise in the sound design field.
CHARACTERS-8/10
Being a movie, the characters are obviously not going to be as deep or as developed as you would find in your typical anime, having significantly more time to develop these characters and have the audience grow attached to them. What is impressive, however, is the amount of depth that Shinkai was able to draw from these characters. For such a short running time, these characters, especially Taki and Mitsuha, manage to still achieve a level of depth and relativity that keeps the audience engaged. The side characters, on the other hand, are somewhat lacking in this department, which is obvious due to the amount of time the movie actually had to develop them.
ENJOYMENT-11/10
This is one- possibly the most- an enjoyable movie I have ever watched. I would struggle to say Koe No Kitachi surpasses it. I cried, then cried some more. Both tears of sadness and joy. If you are on the fence about the amount of emotional return you will get from this movie, don't be, and watch it.
OVERALL-10/10
Overall, just watch it. You lose nothing and gain everything. What I said a second ago about struggling to say Koe No Kitachi beats this out? I can confirm that. This movie beats it. Literally, just watch it.

The sage manga, referring to it like that because I am absolutely not typing out Shikkakumon no Saikyou Kenja: Sekai Saikyou no Kenja ga Sarani Tsuyokunaru Tame ni Tensei Shimashita more than once, is very... mediocre. If I had a noise that described it, it would be akin to a "myyeheeh?", because this- like a lot of modern anime and especially isekais- seems to lack actual meat on its bones. It's vaguely enjoyable in a sort of witch your brain off kind of way, but if you actually look at it critically it's about as deep as a puddle. The story hovers around about a
...
4 because it tries nothing new and relies on methods that have existed for years to advance its very mediocre plot. The art is ok? nothing really stands out about it for good or for bad, so it's like a 6. Characters are extremely predictable and incredibly boring, their interactions all feel very hollow and surface level and they're all established isekai trope characters anyway so who cares- about a 3. The manga CAN be enjoyable if you just turn off your brain and want some mindless entertainment but don't try to actually analyze it because you'll be surprised by how shallow it really is. 6.
Overall, sits at a fat 5. If you have anything at all even slightly better, read that instead. This manga is just too "meh" for me to actually recommend, but if you want some quick tropey enjoyment- be my guest, this manga is too "meh" for me to dissuade you.
On a side note, this thing has an anime scheduled. I've said this multiple times before and will say it again, for every time generic isekai anime 245 gets an animated adaptation, a child in Africa dies of cholera. please stop making them.

This is a purely graded review, don't read this if you're interested in getting an overview of the show, I'm purely writing this to convey my feelings to people who have already watched the show / read the manga. Light spoilers may follow.
Story-
The story remains mostly unchanged from the manga, however, skips some pretty key details and changes others, which makes for a generally less concise experience and story than the manga had. I understand they did this because of time and budgetary reasons, but it still detracts regardless. Still, the story is quite good. 7/10 overall.
Art-
Why.
Why does Viktoriya look like that? Why does may
...
sue look like that? Why do the side characters look good while the main characters look like they were designed in sub 10 minutes by a child sweatshop worker just off their 12-hour shift? WHY?
The character designs looked good. GREAT, even, in the manga. Why do they look so astronomically shit in this? It isn't even artistic license at this point, it just looks fucking awful. There is certainly some merit in the "budget argument" here, as it would definitely suck up the budget to animate the characters as they look in the manga. But WHY DID THEY DO THIS. Viktoriya looks like a fucking blob, the eyes are too big, never animated correctly, the mouths are too small and also poorly animated, hair seems at times to have no or all physics known to man, and generally, the animation is just hard to fucking look at. Another gripe I have with the animation is the excessive use of CGI shots. CGI can be used well, and in moderation- it is neither here. It is not blended well or used at an unnoticeable level, with sometimes KEY SCENE OBJECTS (CENTRE STAGE FUCKING OBJECTS!?!?!? REALLY???) being 3DCG. This is a big no-no.
Overall, the animation is badly done, badly blended, pathetically implemented, and just generally a hellscape. 1/10.
Sound-
Godly OP, Godly ED, fine sound design. 8/10.
Characters-
Characters are largely unchanged from the manga, which is good- because they are great in the manga, but something overall just feels off. Not that I can explain why or what feels off, but something does. Maybe it's the animation or the character designs interfering with my critical judgment. Overall 8/10.
Enjoyment-
IMO, while not being more enjoyable than just reading the manga or the LN (do it, people- you don't burn your eyes on this shit and you get to experience both a better story and characters, it's a win-win.) The anime still holds on to a lot of that enjoyment, and the fact that this is animated at all, regardless of how badly it is animated, adds a lot to that enjoyment factor. 8/10.
Overall-
Overall, 7/10 for the story, 1/10 for art, 8/10 for sound, 8/10 for characters, 8/10 for enjoyment. The mean and therefore overall score comes out at a 6.4/10
Final verdict- read the manga. It's better in almost every way and there's literally no reason not to.

Deca-dence was a surprise. It kind of came out of nowhere and I spotted it, thinking it was another AOT which studios tend to pull off quite well, and watched it out of effective boredom. I wasn't expecting what I got but I sure am grateful for it.
Story- 8/10
The EP2 twist tends to put a lot of people off the anime, from what I've seen online, but really in my opinion the plot twist is what makes this anime. It's been a while since I've seen a seasonal anime do something original and new with its story that it's a huge breath of fresh
...
air from the sodden monotony of the industry as it is right now. It wraps up its story incredibly in the last episode and generally, the anime flows quite well. There are a few things I would change, such as maybe a more delayed twist, e.g. in episode 4 with hints leading up to it, but overall the story holds up on its own and works well.
Art- 10/10
The art of this show is genuinely outstanding. The animation flows incredibly and every character is exceptionally well designed. Everything from the wise-landscape shots to the close in character shots looks gorgeous, and the CGI is used to great effect and blended very well. The show sports a marginally unique art style that plays to its advantage and makes it look all the more beautiful, with character designs being reflective of their personality not only on the surface but also subtly.
Sound- 7/10
Personally I found the sound choice somewhat generic, but then again I ain't a sound guy so what do i know. The sound effects did blend quite well and the use of music is very well done, but again I don't claim to know anything of this process so I'm not really one to comment on anything other than the op and ed, which both fit the show perfectly and also sound stunning.
Character- 8/10
The characters are all very well done, their motivations are clear and they all work in each other's favor. There are some more generic characters like typical rat-man who betrays the main group or the typical scary intimidating corporate bad guy but the main characters and their interactions more than make up for this flaw.
Enjoyment- 10/10
It's not an understatement to say I've enjoyed this more than any other anime I've watched in at least the past 6 months. It struck a chord that I didn't even know could be stricken.
Overall- 9/10
Deca-dence sits at an extremely comfortable 9 in my eyes. Not only is it thoroughly enjoyable, but it also takes a twist and experiments with its story in a way I didn't expect, although it definitely worked to it's an advantage in the long run.

I'm not particularly sure WHY exactly this has been animated. As a generally mediocre manga with some passable character designs and decent art being its strong suit, this kinda flops in every way imaginable.
Story- 3/10. Poor.
It's the classic tropey, done before isekai-esque reincarnation of a character into the future of their world where whatever strength or technical devolution has occurred. It's nothing special and doesn't really bring much to the table. That being said I do tend to enjoy these kinds of things, IF the character dynamic is done well, in this, it's really bad.
Art- 2/10. Dreadful.
The art has been downgraded for studio production levels
...
in the anime. Character designs were really what made the original manga passable, you could tell a lot about Sasha, for example, from her design. However- the designs have been genericized for the anime and no longer look even nearly as good as they used to, the chibi appearance on Misha is gone in favor of extremely generic and they don't really strike a chord like they used to before. The backgrounds and scenes are just about passable. Very standard.
Sound- 5/10. Mediocre.
Some of it was nice, I know literally nothing about sound design so I really shouldn't comment on it.
Character- 1/10. Pathetic.
The characters suck just about as much as they did in the manga. MC is a twat who is literally just the textbook OP unkillable semi-self-insert. The main love interests suck almost as much, Misha has no personality and Sasha is the most generic character in the history of anything. Pretty much every side character is also devoid of any independent and interesting personality, they all suck. This was a problem in the manga and continues to be a massive problem here.
Enjoyment- 1/10. Pathetic.
I wanted to claw my fucking eyes out while watching this. It made me feel worse than when I marathoned SAO to rate it. I hate this with almost all of my heart. If I could give enjoyment a 0, I would.
Overall- 2/10. Dreadful.
There is one thing I cannot fathom. WHY was this animated? It's manga form, to the best of my knowledge isn't particularly popular, and the show isn't inventive in any way shape or form. What could possibly have caused THIS specific series to be animated over literally anything else? Overall, I'm left more confused about why the hell this anime exists than actually contemplating in depth what I thought of it- which isn't a good sign at all, and I can't fathom putting myself through another 9 episodes of this.
