So what's going on with the Konosuba Blu-Ray license?

Discotek released the first 2 seasons on Blu-Ray for some strange reason (I say strange because they are normally into old school anime), the movie was never released in North America on Blu-Ray (I had to import the UK version) and Crunchyroll released the Blu-Ray of the spin-off/prequel (An Explosion on This Wonderful World!).

So what's gonna happen with Season 3? Discotek has the first 2 seasons under "Out of print" on their website, so do they still have the license? Will Crunchyroll pickup the slack?

Any thoughts?

Unless one has bought the shit when it was released, they are shit out of luck now. Not like shit is ever physically available indefinitely... I own countless Blu-rays and DVDs that are now out of print and have been for it seems ages now. This is not just exclusive to Anime either.

Crunchyroll could eventually release Season 3 on Blu-ray but they are not Funimation. Funimation use to be good at perpetually releasing a lot of shit on physical media until they shut down. Crunchyroll on the other hand does not always release shit on physical media the way Funimation use to so it's a gamble... If one is impatient, your best bet is just to import the shit from Japan if you don't mind it not including English subtitles or having it dubbed in any other language and don't mind having it split up in 4 different volumes either (an extremely costly option to import shit these days).

Also remember Discotek didn't even physically release the 1st season of Konosuba in the west for north American fans till 2019. So it took over 3 years for just the 1st season to even get a western Blu-ray release. the same story for the 2nd season too... A consistent 3 and half years later, after it's initial airing, for it's release too.

So unless it's been way over 3 and a half years later, after it's initial airing... I wouldn't worry about it.

There is still a high chance the third season of Konosuba will eventually get an Official Western domestic physical release some time in the year 2028 or even 2029 at most.

I believe Discotek only released the first two seasons becuase back then CR didn't have a home media department, and for them to release any of their shows on blu-ray they had to partner with some other distributor like Funimation, Sentai, or Viz.

But by the time Season 3 came out, CR already had acquired the home media department from Funi

Well that sucks, considering the popularity of this Anime, you'd think more effort would be made.

Domestic physical releases have always taken time to drop. Suppositively, "Chainsaw Man" was still extremely popular enough in the West to get a physical Blu-ray release and even that took about two years.

It's not about effort, it's likely about the bureaucracy of Anime licensing. It could be that the original Konosuba series might not even be up and eligible for anyone else to license it in the West till after a certain amount of time has passed, once the license expired for Discotek. Either way, it always takes time for a western domestic release of shit these days because distributors basically have completely stopped releasing shit as volume releases like they commonly use to in the early 2000s.
