| Years ago, yes. I would have used it more if I'd put some work into it, got it 'just right' as the old meme went. Pretty much every group I'd post to as either disbanded or moved on to something more modern, like Discord. IRC still has it's uses, though. Like deg said, it's great to use like an old Limewire style downloader for long since delisted files. |

I cant for the life of me remember what email I registered on Rizone with or how to recover my password. MAL should bring back it's IRC channel. The admins and moderators messed up not knowing about bridging. Bridging can link different messaging programs together via a bridge that works by using bots that mirror the content so you can connect Discord, IRC, XMPP, Matrix etc together so you only need one open to moderate everything without forcing anything on users and everyone on different programs and account types see the same stuff. |

I used IRC for like 15 years and was heavily involved in the "scripting scene", nowdays all irc channels are (sparsely) inhabited by 60 year olds with bad habits. The medium will be completely obsolete as those people die out.

| @Asangbanne No they aren't and it will literally never go away. Some IRC setups have cloaking where your IP isnt able to be looked up, you also can connect with any other normal method of obscuring your IP. |

| @CC A lot of people were still using MALs IRC when it was shut down which I assume was due to not wanting to have multiple programs open moderating them separately. The point is to make it easier to contact the mods when banned without forcing people what program they can use, which is pretty standard practice these days for websites to have multiple means of contact, this also applies to moderation, which is part of why I didnt offer become a moderator yet because you need a way to talk to other mods but Im not on Discord. I had to be banned from MAL for longer than usual on my last automatic ban because of the new form. Also something is needed as a fallback. It seems oddly common from what ive seen people say for every single user in a Discord "server" to have their account suspended along with the server shut down if a single person in it breaks some rule which is easy. Discord is moderated by AI and furries that hate anime fans. Discord has a habit of kicking out people for no reason. @Daviljoe193 has mentioned before he had a Discord account banned the second he made it. Discord is just far too unreliable because of their practices. Rizon is just one IRC network though (though MALs wa son Rizon, yes) and IRC even in it's prime of usage wasnt fast paced so the user behavior is different from Discord users. I just mentioned IRC since the thread topic and it is just fairly standard usage among the anime community even if most dont use it these days. It doesnt have to be IRC per se just IRC and XMPP are the more standard among people who wouldnt want to make a Discord. Not sure why you think BNC has to be known how to be used by everyone? I havent set up a bridge before but as far as I am aware you could ban users from IRC via Discord so nothing is that different from moderation point. |

Also there is issue most popular Matrix client Element is an Electron app which a lot of people hate. Im not sure why I hear Matrix talked about more than Jami which is similarly user friendly from what I heard. |

It seems you believe I'm arguing with you, but I'm just pointing out why I think it happened and that it's difficult logistically for a team that in the modern day is hurting for moderators as is. Before this thread was made I was thinking of making a thread to ask users what are all the messaging programs they like using or know how to use since I had been thinking about suggesting some sort of bridge set up either to IRC or some other protocol just so not everything is Discord only. I personally dont want involved in the full chats because I am so bad at group chats but just thought it would be nice for telling someone when the site is down and getting a quicker unban when an automatic ban occurs which i had happen to me multiple times now which used to be not too big a deal outside the initial shock but since changes to how things are done it winds up being an actual real ban which sucks. CC said: Unfortunately, it's not a baseline feature of bridging and that requires writing a custom bot for it, which is extra labour for the mod team if anyone even had that skill set in the first place. Again, probably not worth it to the team at the time. hmm maybe I came across some bad information but maybe there are some bridges that solve this easier. Id have to look into it if i find any time. |

| @Asangbanne Sure but which IPis exposed? For me even if no VPN or something if my IP is exposed it is just the IP of a bunch of different people not just me because how my ISP seems to work. This has lead to issues where i randomly get banned for things I had nothing to do with on some sites. |

I'm also bad at large chats, the MAL Discord is usually too fast paced for me. It would be nice if there were an alternative, but I don't have any ideas for that myself. I'm not sure the powers that be would sanction an unofficial IRC channel, but I could probably handle it with how few people would actually use it. |

That is a reason I didn't consider since I figured it would just be to hide their IP, which there is easier methods for that. Offline messages I always found to be unnecessary for a lot of messaging programs since usually p2p programs would just hold the message to send once both people are online so no one even notices any difference considering many people leave these programs open 24/7 and if neither are online ever might as well just email at that point. Hm unfortunately an unofficial IRC channel wouldnt really solve what I was hoping to solve that sort of monopolization that disconnects users from staff when banned as well as mods from each other. I know Kineta said you don't have to use Discord per se when I asked (though this conflicted something she said in past) but I doubt anyone could convince every mod to use something else and everyone agree on what to use. Even security communities don't agree what messengers to use and they all have same goal in mind. If I knew how to program id try to make my own messenger to satisfy most people's needs just to hope it would become popular but that is a big task too for someone who doeant know how to program anymore. I did find a site to what seemed like it might be an interesting IRC community but I lost it they had a pretty synthwave like design of bright colours. lol |

| What an IRC channel can do depends deeply on what mods/configurations a given body of users have vs what the host server would allow. Those of you who used justin.tv may remember their chat was a janky mibbit applet that didn't work half the time and had major compatibility issues with a few major browsers of the time. God help you if you tried to wrangle your server from the actual client while people were connected through the applet. It would randomly just stop working or creating new isolated chat spaces with the same names. There is no such issue with Discord, what's provided is what's allowed and if you're using something else, they aren't going to bug you about it unless you make it a problem. Not having to train your staff in 'how does I chatroom' is another major plus. |
