I've seen a lot of people compare this to the manga and say that it's better because there is more comedy, but I don't believe that's the case. While the manga is very good, the anime's screenwriting and direction feels a lot better in my eyes.

1. World building
- The manga (and LN to some extent) didn't dwell much into how the Isekai'ed world looks like. In the manga, we see that Midgar Kingdom's capital looks like London in 16th century, yet we saw Dark Knights and Men at Arm wearing full plate armor with long sword, which doesn't make sense. Why bother with armor when Dark Knights can cut through steel with magic? And where are the ranged weapons, because fighting in melee with a Dark Knight is a death sentence for any normal soldier?

- In the anime, the time period and technology level of the Isekai'ed world are much more fleshed out. The Midgar Capital looks like an actual capital city with a diverse population. We also see how the people travel around by the means of carriage and trains, there are also lights, which means this world already has electricity.

The martial aspect is also well explained, we see common soldiers use mostly muskets, while Dark Knights use sword, and they wear little armor because it's just encumberment for the style of combat they're engaging in.

2. Character development
- In the manga, character development takes a backseat in the story while the comedy rides shotgun. The manga writer tries to make everything into a comedy while neglecting important character development moment. A prime example is the conversation between Cid and Alexia about her sword skill, this scene is supposed to show us some aspect of Cid's real personality as well as a stepping stone for Alexia's development later on.

In the manga, it starts with a gag, followed by some off-handed comment about Zenon, then Alexia just sadly explains how she hates her own sword skill, just for Cid to stun her with the usual Isekai'ed MC's "I and only I see the value in you, so welcome to the harem, girl" talk.

While in the anime, the scene plays out completely different, they ride on a train together after practice. Alexia immediately jumps on Cid's sword technique, which has been bothering her since their first mock duel. She's shown to be bitter through the entire thing, which means that this must be 1 of her deepest insecurities.
After Cid told her he liked her sword style, there is dead silence on the empty train for a second. These words weight heavily on Alexia's mind, that it takes her a while to come up with a reply. Her expression is mostly hidden during the whole scene, to show conflict in her thoughts, she must be pondering his words to find out whether they're sincere or not. Cid doesn't mansplain to her like in the manga either, he's shown to be resting on his sword hilt while conversing with her, relaxed when making that statement because he's just saying something he believes to be true. At the end, he doesn't even budge when Alexia draws her sword on him, testing him, there is no reasons to, he wasn't trying to smoothtalk or manipulate her, just pouring his honest thoughts.

Most importantly, this scene is written in a way that we as an audience can clearly see that this is a conversation between 2 people, not your typical boring OP MC's nonsensical speech that tends to be overused nowadays.

bro u can enjoy manga more im usually not team manga or ln, even for works like cote I always loved anime but this is different like it's not a huge difference but once u already gne through manga u don't feel the same while watching anime.

if this is a case of me without reading manga I would've not complained about the anime adaptation. but like I said it's the small things.

it's more like spotting the difference which annoys me instead of enjoying the anime itself for which I blame myself and I stopped reading manga, I'm only touching it after the season is over and read it to the point where the story concludes in anime.

honestly I recommend the same thing for all manga readers particularly for this series frst watch anime then read anime. tht process is more enjoyable because u don't feel like ur missing out on minor details in manga to anime comparison.

Like you, I have read the manga before watching the anime as well, but I find the anime is just a lot more fleshed out compared to the manga. Some comedy bits are sacrificed for it, but I think it's worthwhile because the manga is just trying too hard to be a gag all the time imho.

yeah bro I'm not gonna debate which is better but, in my opinion I find it specifically for this series to watch anime and then read manga to like unlock simple or minor bits of cntnt left behind in the anime adaptation.

Completely agreed its these small details you mentioned that elevate the experience. In fact I think the manga ruins the whole idea of the show by racking up the comedy to 100. Eminence in the shadow is more than just random skits of comedy the way the anime does it in a subtle way lands way better

coming from the LN I think the adaption is great.

from what I recall reading they've skipped over some light details, but that's not bad.

I feel like they're portraying the characters and scenes pretty well.

Bro you could actually enhance your armor with magic, however people with a high confidence in their fighting won't bother to do it.

Also disagree with Cid Alexia conversation, the only different in there is the tone, it's more casual in the manga, but I actually like the casual tone in there.

I do like how the anime upgrade the era tho.

Common soldiers CAN'T use magic, plus the way they fight isn't fitting for their level of tech in the manga.

If you like casual tone, then you like it, but objectively, the casual tone hurts character interaction and makes Alexia's feeling for Cid look less convincing.

Yeah that's why they need armor for protection, but why tho?

That's not objective at all, they reach the same conclusion, it's just a matter of preference.

Dark Knights can cut through armor with their magic, so if a common soldier wants to kill Dark Knights, their best bet is crossbows or bows, but we see none of that in the manga. Plus, the military tech in the manga doesn't fit the setting of the world.

Like I said, if you say you like because you like it, then it's up to you. But the way the anime handles it is better than the manga, as I have pointed out.

But common soldiers ain't there to fight dark knight, bows can't pierce magic, they need explosion at least. And I'm asking why it doesn't fit?

Yes and it is subjective.

The world already has electricity and light bulbs, so its tech level should be at least 19th century. Let's say they keep Dark Knights around because of martial tradition and magic, still there is no reasons for common soldiers to fight with sword and armor anymore.

Yeah that's the anime, I thought we are talking about the manga, no? I don't get this "the military tech in the manga doesn't fit the setting of the world." They are medieval soldiers using medieval tech in a medieval world, why it doesn't fit?

The manga has way more. What I mean by that is that the anime skips some conversations of supporting characters that are actually important to understand the motivations of their factions. The anime skips an important conversation between the princesses about thinking shadow uses a magic tool to have that power that’s why they still think they can beat him and the cult at the same time because they don’t understand how strong he really is it’s a small conversation but important. The anime skips a lot of these small conversations which is why I think manga is better.

strangely agree
the show is an 8 whereas the manga (caught up) is like a 5 max for me
i don't like when fun parts of the manga are cut out (like his 48 techniques) but i don't why, actually seeing cid animated and acting as he does is so much better than reading about it

im just commenting to be apart of this convo and be notified when yalll talk cause this is an interesting topic, i am completely new to this series, just started it cause i always be seeing this show everywhere and its name for some reason so i started it, i liked the pre isekai part then second episode i hated, i almost feel asleep cause of the boring ass stiff ass females voice acting like robots, but then i gave it one more episode to see if things improved and then by the end of episode 3 i was actually somewhat hooked with alexia being introduced, and by episode 5 ending i was completely hooked. and now im literally after writting this comment about to watch episode 7 and finnaly be caught up to the anime. and i gotta say i honestly love this shit lol. i love alexia aloooott i hope i get more of her
anyway sorry for this ramble. point is i want to see this convo unfold since im honestly planning on reading this series after the anime or even before the anime ends if im that unpatient to know what happens next ngl lol and seeing how it seems the manga did not do the train scene justice, not giving alexia the depth, instead focusing on the comedy... i dont know how to feel

Doesn't matter, Cid is there, he could easily fck the world building by introducing victorian looking oil lamp. Or it could be a mistake from the artist, but that's just a matter of design.

I have been reading the Manga for years before this anime adaption was announced. As far as I'm concerned, Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! is a comedy manga.

Going by that definition, this anime is an absolute trainwreck.

I enjoy watching it for the novelty of the animated fight scenes and pretty depictions of characters I already love, but the execution of the comedy is so many levels below what the manga achieves it's not even funny. For an easy example, compare the confession scene from the anime to the manga.

In the anime, we see the character shaking, stuttering, slapping his hips, rubbing his sides, making a gross expression, etc... More than being amusing, it's just off-putting. Plus there's a long pause before he reveals "That was perfect! This is exactly the kind of mob character I want to be!".

The joke is far better in the manga, where as he's doing the confession he's thinking. "Confession A la mob. A staccato of 'Ah, ah, ah', topped off with some vibrato. Mess up the line a bit to show fatigue from reciting. Keep changing the pitch while calling her name. Hunch forward at 60 degrees, almost as if you're about to fall ahead. Make note of the distance. A mildly distant 182 centimeters is ideal..." and so on.

The joke here is that Cid is dissecting how to confess BADLY in the same way a nerdy programming student might rant about the ins and outs of their favourite algorythm. Actually, I think most of the story of Eminence in Shadows is carried by Cid's internal monologues, which are almost entirely absent from the anime adaption. I can't count the number of scenes that would work 10x better if they used Cid's internal monologues or didn't make him say something he's supposed to be thinking out loud.

That's my opinion of course, and I doubt I'll change OP's mind. But by my metric, Eminence in Shadows is a failure of a comedy anime.

You can't make an anime by using purely monologue, it will be unwatchable.

The comedy in anime relies a lot more on visual than the manga, and the manga comedy actually has many very cringy jokes that didn't land either.

I never said it should be entirely monologue, although I may have given that impression with my example of choice. My point is more along the lines of "They take out all of the internal dialogue" rather than "I wish it was just the light novel".

I see a lot of shows being afraid to do internal monologue, but some series are honestly designed around it, and in my opinion this was one of them.

A better example of what I'm after might be Episode 8's version of Cid's 'sacrifice' scene, where he saves Rose. Compare the version in episode 8 to the one in Episode 7.

To me, the entire show so far has felt like Episode 7, when what I wanted and expected was the version shown in Episode 8.

Cid's misunderstandings are the show to me, so cutting it out doesn't work for me personally.

EDIT: Also, the manga does use a lot of visual comedy as well, and there are occasions where the Anime has used that correctly. (EX: Cid leaning over to the gold coins when being bribed.) I'm not denying that the anime has to potentially alter what they use, my problem is that it feels like they're going for a different style entirely.

Manga = Comedy
Anime = ...Noir?

That's quite ironic because this arc in the manga is way worse than the anime. Sherry's situation in ep 9 is way more tragic and Cid's retribution for her makes quite an impact imo.

No it isn't....

After reading the whole manga upto it's ongoing chapters and watching the anime upto episode 9, I will still say the manga story is by far better than anime.

They literally just changed the ending of Ep-9. I don't know about the LN.

Ok, some might say the manga penals are small or hard to read. But that's because you're not used to reading manga. The art is improved in the anime more, yes. But what about the actual story?

Difference:
In the manga his 38 or 42 (don't remember correctly) techniques of MOB-fu were shown more detailed. Anime showed nothing, only some random moves. In manga sherry was leaving happily, wishing cid good luck and promised too meet Again and to tell her feelings for him then. Anime did a gloomy part at Ep 9 ending. They also changed the fight scene with rex the named child vs Cid (manga scene was better).

And this is not a world building anime. World building anime is overlord or slime type animes. On the other hand this is secret organisation working in shadows to do what they want. Of course they have influence and of course they have a large number but they don't want dominance or authority. Cid wants to stay cid, the whole organisation was alpha's doing. Even without the organisation he will do just fine Himself.

Just because the pictures are not moving like anime that doesn’t make it bad, because that's exactly a manga is. Those who think anime is better, well bro I have bad news for you, you need treatment or try reading manga more to actually understand it better.

I was starting to think VMPL was a troll but after looking at their profile I'm inclined to agree with OP_Rider that they need to read more manga.

Particularly just how nearly everything on the entire list is rated 9 or 10 lol. Tbh I'm happy for you because I just can't enjoy stuff that much anymore, I've consumed too much. I'd never be able to genuinely rate more than a slim handful of shows a 10. (And most of those heavily influenced by nostalgia)

But the manga is better than the anime in this case, sorry.

I have read wn, ln, manga, play the game, and watch the anime. I enjoy all of it, each type have a different enjoyment to me. Daisuke Aizawa have done a wonderful job for each media.

Is manga your first exposure to the series? then you likely think manga is the best. If you introduced by the WN or LN instead then you'll appreciate the anime more. It's that simple

the objective answer of the best way to experience the story would be reading the LN in Japanase. Aside the usual lost in translation, Yen Press translation actually isn't that very good. Lot's of context, nuances, and undertones are omitted from official translation

The Anime is objectively better than the Manga.

Manga readers often confuse nostalgia with quality!!
