The anime adapts Kumanano's comedy fantasy light novel, which originally began on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website on October 2014. Shufu to Seikatsusha acquired the novel and began publishing it under their PASH! Books imprint in May 2015, featuring illustrations by 029 (Hataraku Maou-sama!). The 19th volume shipped on October 7. The series has over 2.7 million cumulative copies in circulation. Sergei began a manga adaptation on the Comic PASH! website in March 2018. The ninth volume went on sale on November 4. Seven Seas Entertainment licensed both the light novel and manga in October 2019. The 11th light novel volume went on sale on July 12, with the 12th and 13th volumes scheduled to be released on December 13 and February 28, 2023, respectively.
